Abingdon Air and Country Show 2020

Post by itfcscott »

A new format for show in 2020, despite the previous announcements there will be displays at the show, but only helicopters. From the Facebook page:

Press Release 24th August 2019 - a message from the Main Organiser Neil Porter:

After our first 2020 show meeting (to be held Sunday 17th May), Neil discussed with the committee the outline for the next show. He has had a massive re-think aswell as discussing potential scenarios with the committee and is very pleased to announce a 'reversal' of a decision in that, Flying Displays will continue at Abingdon!
However - it will be primarily limited to Helicopters of all types (to fit in the with Helicopter meet) whereby its possibly one of the UK's only 'Helimeet' shows with statics and flying displays with all three armed services being requested to take part aswell as a host of civilian helicopter operators and a few overseas air arms being invited.
This means also means for Neil its less workload and less stringency on the road closures as the 'display box' will be contained within the airfield boundarys.
Neil keeps current in the Flying Display environment, keeping up to date on the rules & regulations and the costs to run the whole show will be less too.
There is potential also for the odd other non helicopter type to display but Flypasts will also feature.

The Flying Program will be less in duration but the outline is as follows to give you an idea (which is subject to alter of course!):

09.00 - 13.15: Aircraft types Fly In to land / park up for viewing.
13.20 - 14.20; Radio Controlled Jet Models / Falconry within that segment.
14.30 - 15.30: Flying Displays program part one.
15.35 - 16.00: Radio Controlled Jet Models part two.
16.05 - 16.30: Flying Displays program part two.
16.40 - 17.30 onwards: Most aircraft depart.

The Country Show will be enlarged too aswell as a bigger Classic Vehicle / Motorbike / Commercial Trucks /Vintage Buses etc area and a re-instatement of the popular Crafts Marquee.
The Saturday evening aircraft Photo night shoot will take place once again with Threshold Aero.

More details will follow on the pricing structure but essentially it will be the same across the board with the same admission fees / stall fees for traders etc as 2019.

It is likely to be on the same side of the airfield as it is now, the west side has been looked at but because Air Displays will carry on being featured, it for safety reasons and reasons beyond Neils control it has to be flown out to the west which is far safer.

Keep tabs on our website / this showpage and Twitter over the coming months :)

Well that's a positive outcome. Hopefully they can be well supported by the Armed Forces. With a bit of luck and some cash we might see a Wessex and Seaking ( or am I just dreaming)
Many thanks to Neil and the Committee.

Update on their facebook page this morning:

Well,2020 planning has been underway for the last month or so, all Stall & Classic Vehicle forms will be online during October (General Aircraft Fly In application form will be live in January) and receiving lots of enquiries: Neil has been busy also started submitting & enquiring about aircraft / helicopters, and can confirm a new Flying Display Director (FDD) whonoversees the safety aspects for our smaller Flying Display will be Mr Phil Winterbottom - a Tier 2 rated FDD for both civilian & military displays, and a friend - welcome Phil.
Neil can confirm the first Helicopter to be part of the show is Steve Athertons ex French Military Gazelle (as pictured). We also welcome back Hawkwalk Falconry & Classic Jets Radio Controlled Models (both of which will demonstrate).
Don't forget - Sunday 17 May is the date.

I agree, I think the 'Helimeet' idea has plenty of potential and I look forward to seeing what else is in store.

Same here, never had myself down as a helicopter fan, but I think I am, I think seeing a Wessex in the air could be a highlight of the year for me, and the Sycamore at Farnborough in 2018 was that years highlight.

Full marks to the Abingdon organisers for postponing rather than cancelling. Time will tell what happens over the next few weeks and months, but I for one appreciate the positivity demonstrated here.
