Post by RAF4EVER »

Have heard a rumour, from someone who works on camp, that there will be no Air Day this year [2020],due to runway resurfacing.

Been due for resurfacing for a few years now, wouldn't be surprised if it's true.

Is a move to Culdrose an option?

What would be the possibility of holding a show at Merryfield?

Saying it cos it's on everyone's mind -

or will this be the convenient excuse for costs to be saved and the Royal Navy to lose its Air Day? Much like the RAF at Waddington. I'd like to think the Navy is better than that, but ehh.. You never know when the bean counters see £-signs.

I’d like to think Yeoviltons situation is different.

A number of factors went into the Waddington cancellation after runway work began including the decision to hub all ISTAR assets at one base and the very real security concerns that went with it. Concerns that were confirmed when those idiots broke into the base hoping to find a Reaper or two to vandalise.

If anyone was to blame for Waddington it was the idiot protesters and the risk they posed to the base/assets if they got inside.

I wonder if this is the reason for the re-brand - now its the "Royal Navy International Air Day" the same event could be moved to a different airfield; Culdrose being the obvious choice!

Never visited the site, but a quick look at the site on Google Earth suggest not.

They should do a seaside show with aircraft operating off the HMS QE...

The name change could allow the show to go to Culdrose then come back to Yeovilton when the runway is finished.

I just hope what happened with Waddington doesn't happen with Yeovilton - runway resurface and postponement then cancellation

Their planning to make Yeovilton and Culdrose air day every 2 years but nothing has been confirmed also Merryfield is a perfectly usable airfield it’s just too small and Predannack is large just in a very poor condition

When it was announced that there would not be the annual event at Culdrose in 2018 it was suggested that the remaining Royal Navy airshow could be alternated between there and Yeovilton in future years. I was sceptical at the time and I remain so; Yeovilton is a bigger venue, it is located in a far more convenient location, and it happens to be the HQ of the Fleet Air Arm. Add to that the links and continuity the Yeovilton team have against the fact that the Culdrose team has disbanded and gone their various ways, taking their expertise and contacts with them, and I think that it is highly unlikely that even if Yeovilton has to take a year off that Culdrose will hold an event.

And also on a selfish note, my parents don’t live 2km from Culdrose, they live 2km from Yeovilton, so it’s a no from me. However, I’d take the opportunity to visit Predennack which I’ve neglected to do in the past. They should do a night shoot there, that’d be sick.

Not sure where the scuttlebutt rumours come from on this thread but there are no plans to alternate with Culdrose, no plans to resurface VLN, no you can’t use Merryfield for the display due to the implications of the Display Area and lack of infrastructure and the name change is simply because, with the demise of the Culdrose Air Day it is now the only RN airshow, simple as that!

They maybe referring to those giant picnic type umbrellas that do take up space (when put up) and can restrict viewing
