Thanks for the new thread and handy links David - Here's to another year of Duxford coverage.

It's become a bit of a tradition for my partner and me to visit on new year's day - in previous years as Friends of Duxford or reluctantly IWM, however this year we're supporting SallyB and received free entry that way. There was no flying while we were there and in fact very little of anything on at all yesterday. It was nice to see the progress with the victor and also work out where all the airworthy Duxford residents had been shuffled around to. The Stephenson Hangar was packed with aircraft, including MH434 which seemed to be partly dismantled.

Hangar 3 was also fuller than normal of warbirds and it looked like the owl was still in residence, given the guano that was apparent on the forward fuselage of MV268. The protective blanket that had been carefully applied to the starboard wing nearby remained pristine!

This new year was a special occasion as it was the first trip to Duxford for our 6 week old baby daughter, Jessica Grace, who was born mid November. And yes - Grace was chosen for the obvious aviation-related reason.

She remained asleep for the entire visit and seeing as ML407 wasn't available, N3200 was a worthy stand-in for a photo.

Any news on 'Showcase' days? The first 2019 event was modest but the third one was really a good mini airshow. I hope that management feel this is an idea worth pursuing and it does give the resident warbird owners a chance to show off their wonderful machines. Fingers crossed.

Duxford Friday 3rd January:

Waiting for the first warbird sortie of 2020 !
Could it be Spitfire HF.VIII G-BKMI / MT928 (MV154), out this afternoon for engine runs ?

What a superb insight into the day-to-day comings and goings at DX - very welcome from the point of view of one who now lives half a day’s journey away by (in sequence) train, air, LHR and rental car. And of course the same on the way home, in reverse order. So I usually manage to get to DX exactly once a year, usually for Legends.

To the regular contributors, both here and in the thread’s previous home - David, Brian, Duxman et al - an enormous thank-you for your efforts. A well-deserved happy new year, all, and all the best for continued DX-ing for 2020.

Presumably following the extensive over-winter engine & prop' repairs after the near nose-over at last years' BoB. display. The rapid application of near full-power & a mighty dab of down-elevator provided the crowd with an extended lesson of how to plough-up an airfield with an increasingly smaller diameter prop! Roughly 16th Spit to t/o from near to the LW. Museum it was an amazing sight to see the continued application of power right through to the tailwheel settling & rolling-out. It could have been a tragic ending but luck prevailed. :sweat: :facepalm:

Chaps, as the thread has just started, Dom has set up a 'Historic Aircraft' section here - might I respectfully suggest a move to the DX thread to there so all is 'back where it was'?

I last saw that Piaggio at the Goodwood Revival 2010 - glad to see it's still around!

Lovely light on the Mk.VIII and Hurricane ground shots there too.

That point was addressed in the Historic Aviation announcement topic - we would like the photo threads to remain in the photography sections.

You can subscribe to this topic by clicking the link at the bottom left corner of the page, but as I've said before, there's an entire forum here that you have joined and you don't have to confine yourselves to the topics and sections that you remember from Key. :smile:

That's over-dramatising it somewhat and really does some disservice to the pilot, as it wasn't *quite* that gung ho! Remember that with the Spitfire, the elevator sits in trail somewhat when neutral. It wasn't a 'mighty dab' of down elevator, some yes, but the pilot was just trying to get the tail up as quickly as possible given he was last in a stream to roll (to increase visibility ahead). Max-continuous power on the Merlin 266 was +18 boost, takeoff nowadays will be done using +7 to +9 boost, so nowhere near 'full power'!

It is great to see these Spitfires back airworthy so quickly. This is the only spitfire which has it's original engine still fitted to her in the world that was fitted in the factory.

Peter Teichman’s PRXI has its original engine fitted.

Hardly an over dramatisation of the Spitfire tip up. Sums it up pretty well. Power on throughout, state of disbelieve I imagine!

The difference between +7/+9 boost to +18 is vast in terms of warbird operation, though. There's no way the pilot was using anywhere near 'full power'. We're all better than Daily Mail sensationalisation like that! It might seem anal to pick up on it, but in this world where the truth seems to be less relevant by the day, you don't know who might read this forum and take that as fact.

Sorry to be a spoiler but MV154 had its RR Merlin replaced whilst based in Germany. It now has a different unit which is a Packard 266
