1/72 Airfix Lightning F2A

Post by ArabJazzie »

Hello all,
For a fair while i had been pottering around with one of the new tool Airfix Lightning F2As with the intention of finishing it as a 92 sqn machine. Although this has featured in the Lockdown thread, i thought it deserved its own thread as it is the 1st completed to remember my now late Uncle, Brian Mathieson who served in the RAF as a driver, including a tour at RAF Wildenrath in the 80s as an Aircraft Fueller, who passed away in November. To compound this even further, his wife Linda followed at the end of February.

So i give you Lightning XN793/A of 92 sqn.

Next up in this will be the 2 blue Phantoms, along with a camo Phantom from the era he served.
Never forget,
Geoff.

Great model Geoff and a grand tribute, that 92sqn scheme is the bees knees. Well done mate! All the best with the Phantoms, which kits are you using?

Thanks for the comments.

Dont yet know for sure what Phantoms i am using as i have Fujimi and Airfix in stock for that. I will need another one of either to complete the blue machines as a matched pair.

You've made a great job of that, and a fitting tribute to your uncle.

I only hope my F6 is half as good when I eventually finish it! What paint/technique did you use for the silver?

Just going to say it. Probably your best finished kit so far! Very well done.

Blackbird, the paint was Alcald II but cant remember which one!

Fumbles, thank you very much. There are flaws along the way with this, but if there was one kit that got attention along the way over the last year, it was this as i tried to get as many of the flaws hidden as possible.
Stay Safe,
Geoff.

Hi Geoff I have been meaning to reply to this post, but for some reason I have been busy  Love the Lightning, never tire of seeing one. Also great idea for a tribute a good idea.
On your idea of the 2 Blue Phantoms, I saw both and had a dig in my pictures. Here's one I hope it helps you as a reference, I will try to dig a pic of the other out soon.

Hope this helps? If I can find them both attended a rare Brize Norton Photocall in good weather, I will see what I can do.

no better rendered than your 5x3s, but some different angles. First two IAT91, latter three Boscombe 92.

Spectacular take off shots, that head on shot is Phantastic!

Out of interest, what was the specific shade of blue used on these? Was it something from stores or a special mix?
