Leuchars QRA

Post by ryan_dufc79 »

Apologies if this has already been posted.
Local paper and the BBC advised that QRA ops are to be returned soon to Leuchars for a short period while Lossiemouth undergoes runway repairs (no dates given I can find).
Does anyone know when this will happen? Maybe due to lack of commerical air traffic but seems to be a fair bit more fast jet activity around Dundee and surrounding area at the moment.

Thanks
Ryan

Welcome the QRA Typhoons back to their natural home for a short period anyway.

Ryan, I would suggest following the RAF Lossiemouth Twitter feed for updates and info. Lots of good photos and links on there as well.

Exactly. Lovely big runway, plenty space, HAS's galore, no other competing units. Don't know what they were thinking.

Would have been ideal new home for the Reds too

One of my biggest regrets about Leuchars closing when it did is that we didn’t get the Airshow in 2018 to celebrate RAF100 now that would have been a good show. No disrespect to The Edinburgh Tattoo and Ayr but the RAF100 Celebration/ Airshow in Scotland Should have been Leuchars Airshow.

For extending the journey to most shows by hundreds of miles?

Given the official position for why the Waddington air show was discontinued I wouldn't have thought it was the most suitable location for the aerobatics team. As for distance from Leuchars to elsewhere, I don't think this is a major concern. As mentioned the quietness and often clear weather at Leuchars makes a far more suitable location. Back in the day the bulk of FJ solos were based in Scotland; Leuchars, Phantom, Lossiemouth, Jaguar and Buccaneer and later, Tornado GR1/4.

Mid-2020 is all I can find . Just seen on FB from that there will be increased activity in the area this week Wed-Fri 12pm-5pm for essential pilot training and air traffic controller currency training. Hopefully they'll come over my bit again Great to hear them round here again after all these years .
