My predictions for tomorrow:

1. Only one person per toilet cubicle at any one time.
2. Minimum 10m social distancing including indoors.
3. Only two substitutes per side in Premier League games.
4. No PL games to be shown on TV just in case those 5G nutcases have got a point.
5. All pubs to shut half an hour before they open (Yorkshire only).
6. No more than six F-16s at next year's RIAT.
7. £100,000 fine for mingling with your neighbors; £50,000 for looking at them; and £25,000 for even thinking about them.
8. 15 million new COVID Marshals to patrol the streets to be recruited by the end of the month.
9. Creation of a 'Restriction Free' county (Essex and Lancashire currently being considered) to see if any of this crap actually makes a difference.
10. Asking the question: "Why didn't they just stop people flying in and out of China when all this started?" to be made a criminal offence.

How can grandparents now be exempt from any local lock-downs for childcare reasons when they had to be much stronger quarantined when it all kicked off and was advised we couldn't use grandparents for childcare??

This is why a lot more people now are disbelieving these new rules and regs when they contradict previous ones and why people are not taking any notice of them anymore.

Because we know a lot more about this now than we did in March, hospitals are better equipped to deal with cases etc etc. This is a constantly evolving situation so it's pointless comparing. Having said that they are still more vulnerable than most so if they can be protected then they should.

So if we're not allowed to compare, why are the gov constantly comparing to march onwards?? Double standards much

a very sobering broadcast just now from Whitty and Valance; very factual and no ministers / PMBJ present either. If anyone missed it here are the main points

the UK will face more than 200 Covid deaths per day by mid November if the virus continues to spread as now, Vallance said. He said:
At the moment we think the epidemic is doubling roughly every seven days. If, and that’s quite a big if, but if that continues unabated and this grows doubling every seven days ... if that continued you would end up with something like 50,000 cases in the middle of October per day.

Vallance said the experience of what was happening in countries like Spain and France showed that increasing case numbers were leading to increasing deaths. (See 11.05am.) It was a simple message, he said:
As the disease spreads, as it spreads across age groups, we expect to see increasing hospitalisations and unfortunately, those increasing hospitalisations will lead to increasing deaths.

Whitty said the recent increase in hospital Covid admissions in England showed the potential for an exponential increase in deaths if the virus was allowed to carry on spreading as now. (See 11.05am.) He said:
If this carried on unabated - these numbers are relatively small, we’re talking about around 200 at the moment - but if this continued along the path that [Vallance] laid out, the number of deaths directly from Covid ... will continue to rise, potentially on an exponential curve, that means doubling and doubling and doubling again.


Whitty said the almost all parts of the country were at risks from rising rates of coronavirus. He said:
What we’ve seen is a progression where, after the remarkable efforts which got the rates right down across the country, first we saw very small outbreaks, maybe associated with a workplace or another environment, then we’ve seen more localised outbreaks which have got larger over time, particularity in the cities.


Whitty hinted that people might be encouraged again to work from home.
Describing what could be done to combat the virus (see 11.19am), he said:
We have to break unnecessary links between households because that is the way in which this virus is transmitted. And this means reducing social contacts whether they are at work, and this is where we have enormous gratitude to all the businesses for example who have worked so hard to make their environments Covid-secure to reduce the risk, and also in social environments.

We all know we cannot do this without some significant downsides.

This is a balance of risk between if we don’t do enough the virus will take off - and at the moment that is the path we’re clearly on - and if we do not change course we are going to find ourselves in a very difficult problem.

How can he possibly know these figures when compared to the first wave of the corona virus I would say over 50% of people have been either social distancing / high level hygiene protocol / wearing masks etc also how many people have created an immunity to the virus, if anything I would have expected a second wave to have far lower figures compared to the first.
Dont foreget we also soon be getting all the flu and pnumonia cases as we do every single year.

It's something called the 'power of three'. You're more likely to remember three things than two or four. Don't ask me why but it's been researched extensively. We teach it in school as an authorial technique in narrative (story) writing and you find it in speeches a lot too. It has many variants - repetition of one word (we will never never never give up) or phrase, or perhaps the repetition of an idea or theme (stay at home, stay alert, stay alive or whatever it was - that one obviously didn't work...).

It's effective though, whether consciously or subliminally.

Churchill used it in his speeches, but cleverly also used more than three on occasion, which makes you sit up and take notice even more when you do it sparingly.

1. Chris Whitty knows those answers because he is exceedingly clever and has access to all the relevant data.
2. 50% social distancing. Not sure about that but certainly not in the late night bars where the "kids" have been partying or the Asian weddings (sorry to sound racist but it's a fact) or the idiots who have come home from holiday with the virus and promptly decided to have cricket matches. Chris Whitty (maybe it was PV) said today that the virus spreads through droplets AND aerosol which means it's a different ball game and reinforces the need for mask wearing.
3. People with immunity - up to 8% of the population. Not many.
4. More people died in the 2nd wave of the 1918-19 Spanish Flu pandemic than in the 1st wave.
5. There is some evidence that covid-19 led to fewer cases of flu this year but I take the point.
6. Regarding your question over the rule of 6 - that's just the question the MPs want to get to the bottom of so that's why BJ is having to announce the new measures in THE House tomorrow and not just blurt it out to a few toady journalists.

Why the rule of 6? A number had to be chosen and it is ultimately a compromise between the lower the better for reducing transmission of Covid on the one hand, and the larger the better for the convenience of family & friends gatherings on the other hand. The choice of the number is therefore somewhat subjective. Five would be safer but would hack off an even larger number of people. And whatever number they chose, the same question would have been asked.

For my money, those who can work from home should have been encouraged to continued to do so, only attending the office if they needed or wanted to for a change of pace.

not a lot but table service only with police dishing out fines may help. Pubs aren't geared up for table service as any visit to Spoons will testify, more staff are having to take drinks to tables for people using the app rather than actually serving at the bar (which will presumably be banned from Thursday)

The higher the fine, the greater the risk of injustice if the authorities are wrong, and therefore the harder it is to administer, and find someone liable to pay it. There may be one or two really really blatant “example” cases (like Corbyn’s brother) for the papers to crow about, but nothing of substance.

It’s entirely a newspaper headline, to keep up the facade that they’re tough and no-nonsense. There is absolutely nothing beneath the surface of that claim.

And all of this is just the general principle of “£10,000 fines!”. Add the fact that their credibility is completely shot for every day they bluster about these £10k fines, but don’t fine Cummings, and you get a scenario that is impossible to justify beyond a cheap-shot bit of spin.

I am sure they are bothered but they simply do not have the resources to send officers to deal with these issues. Sometimes weeks go by without seeing a single police officer round my way.

Completely agree, unfortunately there's some companies like the one I work for, where there's some sort of weird one-upmanship between senior managers to make the place covid secure and get everyone back in.
It's almost like they think there's a prize for who has the best covid measures and who got the full team back to work the quickest. Completely bonkers.
