USMC F-35B and USMC KC-130J both down after mid-air. Jet pilot ejected and Herc forced landed with those on-board OK. About 150nm East of San Diego.

Looking at that pic I think the damage on the right may just be the result of the collision (as apparently said in the comms recorded); the damage on the left wing (and the AAR pod in the field) caused by the forced landing.

Listening to the ATC recording, they said they had lost number 3 & 4 in the original emergency call.

Given how far they nursed this thing and dumped it on the ground so successfully, the crew will be buying beers for the flight crew for many a year to come.....and yes, I'll be surprised if the pilots don't get a gong for that feat.

Looks like a fine piece of airmanship. At the same time the “how” it even had to do that will be intriguing.

In my opinion I think it will be a Navy Cross, unless the pilot was seconded from the USAF, good work all the same to get the aircraft down in one piece.

Without wishing to speculate and great everyone got down safely one way or another, which is the most important thing.

But before we all give the Herc pilot a medal, perhaps the authorities can clear him/her of not having caused the incident in the first place?

History and physics and self-preservation (not since the 80s have we seen large tankers with ejector seats!) dictate it’s quite difficult to fly a tanker into a receiver, but you have a point to an extent.

Probably out mucking about off-roading or such like and saw it and thought they were going to get a low level flyby rather than it spear into the ground in front of them.........unless they had seen/heard the mid-air above them, and/or the F-35 pilot banging out?
