Day 4 was a mystery tour. On our way to our location for the day we stopped briefly at Gila Bend airport and shot these.

Image

Image

I still find it amazing a small civil airstrip has such gate guardians. Finally after a few hours driving we turn off on to what was basically a dirt road and after a few miles we arrived at the Barry Goldwater's weapons range! to see live weapon firing.

Please forgive the quality of the shots we was in desert with the temperature in the 130s and the heat haze was huge.

Image

It looked like it would largely be a viewing day as obviously we were nowhere near the targets and the aircraft appeared tiny. it was impressive to watch.

Image

Then the star of the day appeared.

Image

and starting gun firing!

Image

The first hit shots you saw above was from a F-16, below is the hog gun run!

Image

The 10 pilot also liked his picture being taken with a few flybys of our tower.

Image

Image

Considering this was one of our "days off " not a bad day at all!

Day 5 was a very busy day. We was in Tucson and the base being visited was Davis Montham AFB this of course has the Boneyard as part of its complex. We was lucky in being allowed on the main base in the morning and from mid morning onwards the whole of the bone yard! This could only be done safely on a bus those familiar with the American yellow school buses know they have sliding windows so allowing us shooting.

Everything was on the clock today so we did the cactus park in 15 mins.

Image

Image

The morning was to be spent with the A-10 but there was plenty more aircraft on site.

Image

Image

Image

Before long the Hogs arrived.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Before we knew it, it was time to go to the boneyard. We had been asked what we want to see most?

Image

Image

Image

Need a clue? Other aircraft were there too.

Image

Image

Some folk like Phantoms there was quite a few still there.

Image

Image

Vikings had recently retired too.

Image

In case you didn't guess we wanted Tomcats!

Image

This doesn't do justice to what we saw. I will post more on my golden oldies theme.

this thread keeps on giving. Great stuff.

Just a single shot from me. Back to 2007, and a fun holiday day out at Kennedy Space Center. It was a small bit of luck to be passing the runway when a couple of astronaut's T-38s landed, this being one.

October 1996, I was on a tour of the west of the USA. Not quite up to Ianf's epic but a revelation to me

I agree Andy easily the best thread on the site, very enjoyable it is. Tony, Edwards is on my to do list. loving the shots.

This thread is titled Aviation on this day. So Three pics from today 2020!

Were I have been all day.

Image

After our second post lock down Dry spin Anti det run. Which was successful.

Image

Image

A dry spin allows us to turn the engines over without starting them but does lubricate the systems. We also did control surfaces etc. Overall a good run, a few minor gremlins, which we can fix. Covid did damage our systems. She has been worked on weekly for 26 years so going 5 months without took its toll. We are nearly back to were we was. So a good day!

Day 6 no base today just the awesome museum that is Pima.

Image

I always wanted to see a Skycrane. You don't get its size till you see a DC-9 in the back ground is roughly the same size!

Image

Image

When I was there this had not been completed.

Image

Image

Image

Image

We spent a full day there and I still want to go back again, With new additions and angles I didn't do this is a museum worth repeat visits.

Airshow time again. 2007, and the sweet little waterfront Albert Whitted in St Pete, Florida. It was a great little show, but cloud and an on crowd wind make most of the photos look like thay were taken on a wet day in Sunderland rather than very warm Florida.

This time last year I was at the RAF's Air Combat Power Visit, which was held at RAF Waddington. Conditions weren't great for photography and it was difficult to come away with anything decent.
