Loving these as usual. The pics from the American tour are particularly cool. Tony (or anyone else) can you explain why all the aircraft in the boneyard and at the museums have the glass removed from the cockpits? Is it to stop anyone easily getting in to the cool stuff inside? To just prevent them from breaking eventually? Or some other reason?

No the glass is still there, they just paint protective film over them so they don't get affected by the sunlight

Tour Day 8: Our final day of the tour. Today it was TRavis AFB Open House, again bright and sunny but with a strong wind. We decided to do the base museum and static then head off to the Sacramento Museum at McClellan ALC

Wednesday 26th October 2016 saw a visit to RAF Coningsby for the Air Combat Power Visit. Not many photographic opportunities but always nice to get up close with modern military equipment.

27 October 1996. Tour - The Final: after overnighting in San Francisco, we headed to the airport but on the way stopped of in the car park of the NASA Ames facility at Moffett Field

Image199610_NASA-Ames_0003 by Tony Adams, on Flickr

After that it was check-in and off home.

An eye opening tour, by todays' standard, I did not take that many images by todays' standards - I can only think a memory card top-up would have been required if I had been shooting digital

Hope you've enjoyed the images, if you stuck with my updates.

Today 2015 was the end of the V force flying era. But when we got to Finningley ( it will always be that to me) It did not look promising.

Image

It went on like this all day till about 45 mins before dark she finally came out. With a mix of wet runway and the sun breaking through the next twenty minutes was something special.

Image

The first flypast gave us something I had never seen vapour on the entire top wing!

Image

Image

Image

It was not a display just fly throughs, but they did do something they didn't do at shows namely a touch and go. Which would have helped the display a lot. This was also the last ever take off for a Vulcan.

Image

Image

This was her last ever climb out and the sky seemed to agree it needed a spectacular back drop for her to do it.

Image

Then all to suddenly, the final landing.

With the fire trucks giving a salute, the Vulcan story and indeed V force had ended as a flying aircraft.
Image

I was sad to see it end, but I was not as emotional as I had the time before at Finningley when she opened her bomb doors with the message farewell on it. I was proud to have played a tiny part in her upkeep, with us on the Victor team supplying her with parts to enable her to continue flying.

Great set Ian, hard to believe it was five years ago

I remember watching the live video feed on my mobile at work and hoping no customers would interrupt.

I may be wrong George but I think actually touching down used a small cycle of fatigue life which is why they did so few. People forget 558 went way past the fatigue life of other Vulcans, at the end she was almost experimental. If that applies to todays aircraft I've no idea.

Now there is an impressive beastie. FB-111 pre-production aircraft, adapted to an F-111G and sent to the Air Logistics center at Sacramento where it received its spectacular paintjob, it was even more impressive than it is here. Unfortunately the museum decided to repaint it at a later stage in "ordinary" FB-111 colours which rather took away its relevance to being preserved here. Great catch, very jealous Tony.

In 2016 I got to the Brize Nightshoot, the first (and currently) last of these events as far as I know.

In 2016 I too was at Brizes night shoot. In fact Andy I sat with you on the coach, when we were taken on base at the start of the shoot.
