Next subject: the A-10.
Pulled back from european theatre, selected for retirement on more then one occasion, dwindling airframe numbers, but the hog is still flying around.

My one and only encounter with an A-10 was at Aviation Nation 2011 @ Nellis AFB, and I enjoyed every minute of it!

One of the earliest to be seen in the UK, this arrived at the 1977 Tattoo and had some considerable novelty value as the A-10 had only just started operational service.

Re: 48hr Photo Comp: A-10
As a start something a little different, the only two seat A-10 at Edwards AFB collection. the YA-10B, not ordered as they considered the A-10 straightforward enough to convert to without two seat trainers. It served the company as the A-10 N/AW demonstrator as well for the all weather night/adverse weather attack aircraft, again with no orders. Since repainted quite poorly.

Re: 48hr Photo Comp: A-10
As an air cadet we were taken to Wainfleet and Donna Nook and saw the A-10 on gunnery practice. Quite a remarkable aircraft - and noise and well worth a comp theme.
But on with the pics.
Mildenhall 1997 arrival.
Fairford 1993
The business end at Leuchars 1992.

Re: 48hr Photo Comp: A-10
Don't have much A-10 material to offer - the weather is normally rubbish whenever I see 'em.
One occasion that the sun shone was during Exercise Vanguard in 2005, but as a noob to photography at that time with basic kit and no talent, these shots do not hold up well today.
Another couple from RIAT 2011. Went to watch the aircraft getting ready and then returning to park as the overcast conditions were not ideal for display photography.

Y'know what, I have never really noticed how off centre the nose wheel is - is that simply to counter balance the off centre gun?
And come to think of it, how come the gun is off centre anyway (maybe it's simply to counter balance the off centre nose wheel?)?
I know a lot of modern jets have just one gun on one side, but if you're sticking a gun this size in the nose anyway, why not in the middle. I don't know the science behind these things, but I can't imagine it makes it any easier to fly when you're firing the damn thing!

If you look closer you may see that one of the seven nozzles is exactly in axis of the plane (like 9 o'clock) - I guess it's the "active" one. So it may look like off center, but in fact it's a perfect desingCJS wrote: ↑Wed 09 Dec 2020, 8:35 pmY'know what, I have never really noticed how off centre the nose wheel is - is that simply to counter balance the off centre gun?

Re: 48hr Photo Comp: A-10
Topic choice of thread given recent news...
First up, one shot from the FRIAT Grandstand in 2011, the last time the A-10 Demo Team displayed in the UK. The 180 degree turn to backtrack the runway was performed directly infront of the grandstand which was nice to get a head on shot of the machine. As previously pointed out in the thread, the off centre nose gear clearly visible.
Next up, one from the display itself, but this time at Oshkosh 2012. It closed the flying display on Friday evening in gorgeous light.
And finally, one from a Heritage Flight. Thunderbolt & Lightning, very very frightening...!

Spot on Draken - the firing barrel of the GAU-8 was centre line to the aircraft so the pilots did not have to 'kick over' (apply asymmetric rudder) to keep the aircraft in a straight lineDraken wrote: ↑Wed 09 Dec 2020, 8:43 pmIf you look closer you may see that one of the seven nozzles is exactly in axis of the plane (like 9 o'clock) - I guess it's the "active" one.
