What's the betting for Saturday?
Travelling down Friday PM and staying nearby- forecast is different depending which weather app you look at.

First RIAT so will be seriously gutted if nothing is flying!!

It's the wind gusts on the Saturday that seems to one of the main problems - Honestly not sure how much would fly in such conditions.

4.45am kempsford campsite, rains just started, if you look at rainfall radar it shows the bulk of the bad weather tracking west of us, maybe we will stay just on the edge and get lighter showers than suggested

Decision on the flying should be made soon.

Even if nothing takes part in the flying, I hope they still let people see the static, i'm already on my way from London...

I've got a bad feeling tomorrow (sat) will be cancelled due to health and safety and the possibility of things being blown into the static aircraft...

Hopefully Saturday won’t be that extreme, but it would be nice to have a decision this evening!

It's not like 2008 where the getting in and out was the problem. I can't see them actually shutting even if they pull the flying completely.

Get inside those STEM tents too and have some fun!

It all depends on the forecast of thunderstorms (on some forecasts, not all). If there is lightning coming down then how safe is it to have tens of thousands of people in a very exposed area? Genuine question. If it’s just wind then it will be open no problem.

On a more positive note, i’m approaching Reading and the cloud base is high with no rain at all.

Hopefully we get a bit of that later on in the day!

Although wet, the cloud base looks reasonably high. Although my eyesight is terrible!

Unfortunately I think Ill have to agree along with the fact they'll be paranoid about hats and brollies blowing onto the active runway.

Gusting 38kts from ssw PM Saturday, thunder and lightning, now thinking tomorrow a 75% wash out also. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/fo ... 2023-07-15

Just looked at Brize TAF for today, nothing will fly apart from any arrivals,100%

With my optimistic hat on the commentary team imply that conditions should be ok for some displays with vis 5k and forecast to improve and cloud scattered at 500’ BUT main base 2500’. Cautiously optimistic here if the forecast holds true ( but knowing little about individual display requirements )

I decided to stay in my accommodation today in Witney today due to the forecast. Been constant steady rain since about 0600 here and sat back with a cup of tea watching the tennis No end to the rain in sight here.

In the distance, I have heard jet noise and it isn't from Brize. So some stuff has been displaying - I understand that the F-35B has displayed, along with Saudi Hawks amongst others. Not a total loss it seems for those braving it today. Consider yourselves saluted.

A friend of mine bailed out at 1pm due to being saturated and upon realising that the Spanish Harrier would not display.

Yes, some Aircraft did fly. If I am not mistaken these were: Saudi Hawks, Gripen E, RAF Typhoon, Mangusta, NH-90, HH-139, Danish F16, Sk60, French C-135FR flypast, RAF Voyager flypast, RAF A400 flypast and the F35B

I'm back in my caravan in kempsford camping I abandoned the show about 2pm, drenched, not a single photo taken, lot of static had covers on got to be worst day ever at riat for me, luckily I was here from Monday and have 1500 pics from previous days
Don't know If its me but there seemed to be many more kids here today than I've ever seen before on a Friday? Dont mind through of course, got 2 myself but queues for everything longer

Tomorrow looks worse so probably watch from Kempsford, which is rapidly turning into a mud bath, getting out should be fun!

One thing to think about with the wind for tomorrow, if its gusting 40kt but the wind is coming at a 45 degree angle to the runway then actual crosswind component is only 20kts, therefore would hopefully be in tolerance for the majority of the aircraft to fly in

Duplicate from main RIAT thread…

Hot off the press the latest TAF for Brize has been published….Apologies for posting here but people seem to be getting in a tizzy about things tmrw hence posting here.

TAF

Quick decode…..
From 7 am local the base vis and cloud base is 10k+ and a smattering of clouds at 1500’ increasing to a 30pc chance of clouds increasing slightly ( scattered ) at 1800’. Between 9am and midday wind picks up SSW’erly 18kts gusting 30kts. You then have a 30pc chance between 10am and 4 pm of a heavy shower with vis dropping to 4K in heavy rain and a 2400’ cloud base and wind gusting to 41 kts. This should be stressed it’s of the squally, gusty shower variety and should pass quickly.
All in all it’s not too bad, breezy and showery yes but well within the limits for most fast jet, helicopter a/c. Wouldn’t hold my breath for the 262 though.
Hope this is of use.
