After 2004 and 2014, the swiss seem to have dropped Payerne as their jubilee airshow base. On 30 and 31 of august a show will be held at Emmen. Also the name Air looks dropped, as it is announced as airspirit 2024. For those thinking of going: this is the week before airpower, so it might be something to combine in one trip.
Unfortuinately, I've not been able to view the website yet, which should be https://airspirit24.ch

A weather forecast is a forecast and just that

It's an interesting location, I would bet on a north facing display line due to the built up areas around the airfield which would be great for photography. The north also has plenty of parking both within the base and the other side of the road for display aircraft.
The South makes sense due to the number of flat fields for parking near-by.
However, that means very little static, the only hard standing on the south side is at the RUAG facility.

During previous events at Emmen, all static was in and near the hangars on the north side. The whole southside (RUAG) was off limits.

So that’s a south display line then? That’s not exactly attractive!

Am I looking at a different map than everyone else? Google shows the runway at Emmen oriented northeast-southwest (04-22). So if you're standing on the Patrouille Suisse side, yes the sun will be in front in the early hours but behind enough for what I'd assume to be the bulk of the show that the display won't be entirely backlit.

The sun is directly down the runway at 15:02 local time on 30th August 2024.
So it depends a lot on the side the crowd are.
If they’re south side it will be the same as KB - great until the sun is in line with the runway then it becomes a backlit challenge.
If it’s north side, it’s backlit until that point.

Gotcha. Looks like it might be one of those shows where you just bag the camera or get creative with editing then.
As an aside, being an airport ops guy, I'm intrigued by the road cutting through the south runway safety area...

Well you've got Kolbenstrasse which is a footpath running across the runway, and Kirchfeldstrasse at the end of the runway. There's also Seetalstrasse and a railway line at the other end of the runway, not to mention the farms and light industry within the airfield boundary!sylvancatharsis wrote: ↑Sun 19 Nov 2023, 8:39 amGotcha. If that intrigues you, visit Meiringen, Stans or Alpnach. Public roads crossing the runways is very common in Switzerlandsylvancatharsis wrote: ↑Sun 19 Nov 2023, 8:39 amGotcha. Looks like it might be one of those shows where you just bag the camera or get creative with editing then.
