It turns out this MiG-29 was not heading for Ukriane. It was being transported from Malbork air base to Minsk Mazowiecki air base (former MiG-29 base, now the home of the FA-50).

More info: at the end of 2022, 14 MiGs which were stationed at the Minsk Mazowiecki air base were permanently moved to Malbork to make space for the arriving FA-50.

At the same time the aircraft from Malbork were donated to Ukraine. As some of the MiGs were ex-German, permission was needed from the German government to transfer them to Ukraine. Only 5 aircraft were approved.

You may ask why the Malbork aircraft were chosen to be donated. It turns out they were not modernised (the Minsk ones were).

From the airframes which were ex-German and did not get approved for donation to Ukraine (4 airframes IIRC), one has been reserved for a museum in Germany (might still be flying, once it runs out of airframe hours it will be donated to the museum) , one has been transported to Minsk Maz. Air base as a gate guard (the one in the video) and the other two are still flying (they might be currently used as a source for spare parts, or might be flying until they run out of airframe hours).

This leaves 14 MiGs originally from Minsk + max 3 from Malbork which are currently flying in Poland. I am guessing that the three ex-German airframes will be retired soon, leaving only the 14 modernised MiGs still in service, until their retirement in approx 2027.

I hadn't appreciated they were still planning on keeping them flying for a few years yet - good news for enthusiasts, hopefully another RIAT appearance in them yet.

Not your fault, but having seen the JASDF version recently which was also light grey on mid-grey boring too, only one word for this.
Stunning? It's really, really meh!

Well they have "submitted a Type Certificate application to the UK Civil Aviation Authority". A step forwards on a long journey.

Am I miss understanding what the role demo is … or is actually still a good little demo? I know it’s not the full display but a role demo could be good if not better ? If I’m wrong let me know
