I’d like to see the Swedes jazz up their Gripen in a new scheme or something, i’m pretty sure it’s been the same display for the past 13 odd years!

Another nice updated, Gripen is always a good display and it will be nice to see the Alize again for the first time in a few years.

Always enjoy the Gripen, not too bothered by the NH90 but excited to see the Alize, never seen one so it will be nice to see it arrive on the Friday along with a few F16s already said to be arriving Friday :)

There are multiple display pilots this year. This year's display is coming from F21 - in recent years it has been the F7 display pilot at RIAT.

A fine update. I enjoy the love that the Gripen gets. Easy to overlook, but it’s a very competent performer. The Alizé is also a lovely catch. Up there with the Turbo Firecat.

German NH-90 also decent, amazing how quickly it’s become a reliable attendee after it took almost a decade to coax one over.

Things look to me to be shaping up nicely indeed.

Definitely shaping up nicely. I’m not one to go crazy over fast jet displays but we’re looking at a month and a half of updates and we have 7 fast jet demos already. This year could definitely become a jet fest. As much as I like a lot of variation, I can except that fast jets are the crowd pleasers (other than the aerobatic teams) and who doesn’t love a good jet display! This year could definitely be one to remember!

The Swedish Gripen is an excellent performer and always worth watching - a consistently punchy, well flown display whichever wing it comes from.

Like the Belgian F-16 - the Swedish Gripen is one of those regular stalwarts that contributes so so much to making a RIAT, a RIAT - year in, year out - and it wouldn’t (won’t in the case of the Belgian) be the same without it.

Excellent stuff, never really appreciated them until i saw them at Duxford a couple of years ago but i think I've just taken it for granted seeing them so much and now knowing they don't have long left.

Can they validate a display on a public show day? Pretty sure this is a discussion that has happened before!! Displays can be validated "off site" can't they? It's a bit late to be doing it in front of 1000s of spectators.

The Hellenic F-16 demo, the ancient god wasn't on the runway practising his thunder and lighting skills.

The Hungarian Hind also validated on the Friday morning in 2022. It went up just as I was arriving to the grandstand.

Evening All,

To correct two earlier posts, there were no validations undertaken on the Friday of RIAT 2022 for any participating aircraft, nor will they be this year.

To recap on some earlier comments...

A great offering from QinetiQ, but the DA-42 escapes again!
We did ask! But a splendid showing of nearly everything in their fleet for this years theme which we're very pleased with. DA-42 will have to wait until next July...

Right that’s it. If [RAF F-35B] doesn’t operate from Fairford I want refund.
Hoping that's sarcasm Rich?

I thought that was down to the length of the runway as much as anything else?? In which case a STOVL aircraft shouldn't struggle too much.
The heat produced by the vertical exhausts of the F-35B in STOVL mode means it could cause damage to any blacktop runway. Hence why the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers have a unique thermal protective coating of their deck and RAF Marham had significant work performed to upgrade their operating surfaces. For RIAT 2016, a special landing pad was constructed to allow the F-35B to land vertically, which was removed from RAF Fairford after the show was complete.

We do need the Tiger before they are consigned to the bin.
As another poster eluded to, there are issues for the type not being cleared to fly over water, so a RIAT appearance is unlikely, but we will keep trying various options!

RIAT have previously promised to upload a sort of transcript or summary of the meeting in the FRIAT member’s area of the website (which otherwise has nothing in it), but have failed to do so.
FRIAT members will receive a write-up from the FRIAT Forum in the near future.

Cheers,
Peter

I strangely remember the The Hind/Zeus being quite ahead of proceedings on the Friday and even the commentary referring to them as validation before they took to the runway and even during their displays there was no commentary whatsoever just George Bacon telling us to slap sun screen on and drink water.

Is this the Mandela effect at play here? 😆

But thank you for the update Peter!

Perhaps there’s a difference between “practice” and “validation”.

No leaks this year. Signing in blood and the insertion worked a treat.
