Abingdon Air & Country Show 2024

Post by Abingdon (Oldtower) »

Our annual Air(show) & Country Show is set to take place once again at Abingdon for Saturday 18th May 2024.
Further details as planning time goes by at www.abingdonairandcountry.co.uk

One thing - we hope for the return of the RAF C17 in the static which was hugely popular being open to the public (requests have gone in so fingers crossed nearer the time).

Taken from the Facebook page, Jersey Jerk Mustang added to flying and static.

Good morning - we are very pleased to announce another top World War Two aircraft joining us in the flying display aswell as on the ground will be this immaculate North American P51 Mustang 'Jersey Jerk'.
This is believed to be its UK display debut with us having been in residence in Australia for a number of years.

This aircraft is painted up as the personal mount of Major Donald Strait who was assigned to the 361st Fighter Squadron / 356th Fighter Group based out of Martlesham Heath, UK.

The Mustang adds to the already announced Hawker Hurricane Mk1 and Rolls Royce Supermarine Spitfire Mk19 in the air displays & static park as a brace of World War Two fighter representation with the possible inclusion in some form of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at a later date to be announced.

That could be quite something - hopefully it'll be confirmed by the show in due course.

Wouldn't get your hopes up as has had most shows on calender over years and been to very few ,also no midland on calender and really can't see Abingdon who have a good show each year on a very limited budget could afford this

It's certainly interesting - whatever way you look at it.

The limited budget that you mention being cited as why the ex-Belgian Sea King was removed from the show's listing in 2022 - surely a fuel-guzzling after-burning jet coming from far across the North Sea to appear is far too expensive.

Maybe, because it's the SWAFHF Schedule, it should be ignored for, as you say, so many shows listed never have an appearance materialise - seemingly any contact between organiser & team leads to a listing. (Looking at posts on this forum, Cosford 2015 was listed after a quote was requested - which was in the end too expensive) - then again, do all the listings even stem from contact, or have some been pure aspirations by the team in the past? Nonetheless, presumably of all shows in Europe that SWAFHF could have picked out of thin air to list, would Abingdon be the first they think of? I would think not (with no offence intended to Abingdon), there must be some reason to make them think they're coming (however small or unrelated to an appearance actually being confirmed) for them to put it on there - surely there are positives in that to take away - regardless of if they actually make it.

Alternatively, it could be that it will be appearing, but I'll wait for the organisers to confirm before getting too excited. Maybe the ability of the loud after burning jet if sufficiently marketed to attract crowds (not just enthusiasts) makes the hefty fee justifiable.

Far more puzzling about the SwAFHF Calendar and the Flying Bulls calendar (https://www.flyingbulls.at/de/events-stories/events) is that neither are advertising any presence at Midlands Air Festival despite that show pushing their participation for months.

Or is Midlands just riding on the coattails of Duxford and Sywell which were the real driving force behind such participation?

As the Event Organiser overall i did around the same time when limited military requests were sent in last year send the Chief Pilot of SWAHF an email just asking details as its worth sometimes to enquire - and thats as far as its gone!

Even though yearly we work to a limited budget so have to factor in something in the air side that might cost abit, we have done well over the last 24 years including good deals with the Canberra, Vulcan, various warbirds etc and who can forget when we had the Dutch F16 'Orange Lion' solo demo, a real coup in 2010.

But yes some privately owned historical aircraft do cost....... alot!

"Riding on the coattails"? Far from the truth. A listen to the excellent podcast Dom linked to, talking to Trevor Graham, will explain all.

Flying Displays update as at 23/3/2024:

The Titans Display Team
Rolls Royce Spitfire Mk19
Muscle Pitts (with car race)
The Gazelle Squadron 4 ship
Hawker Hurricane Mk1
Auster AOP6
P51 Mustang 'Jersey Jerk'
BAC Jet Provost T5
Harvard

All will be static too. We hope for one more Flying item tbc soon.

Statics will include the whole of the Historic Army Aircraft Flight, Scout with anti tank missiles, the return of locally based RAF Tutor & Boeing C17A Globemaster (subject to confirmation due to operational needs), Plus a range of vintage and general aviation types booking in as part of the Fly-In.

Various ground attractions associated with a Country show aswell as Leeuwarden based 322 Squadron personnel bring their Spitfire cockpit virtual reality simulator (& yes we also requested for a Lockheed Martin F35 Lightning II from 322Sq but due to deployments forthcoming / ops requirements they cannot spare a jet however as ever is worth a try).

Tickets are available from the website www.abingdonairandcountry.co.uk
