Best of British - 12th May

Post by Professor_M »

The Best of British (Season Premiere) on Sunday 12th May has had its first participant announced, the recently refurbished Spitfire XIV MV293 (G-SPIT)...
Air Show Announcement!
Our season starts with a bang as we welcome Spitfire XIV (G-SPIT) to Old Warden for its Shuttleworth debut on the 12th May!
Built in late 1944 in Supermarine’s Keevil facility, this aircraft was in service with the RAF up until 1945. Having spent time in India with the Royal Indian Air Force, it was recovered in 1978 by Doug Arnold of Warbirds of GB Ltd.
Owned today by Fighter Aviation Engineering Limited, the aircraft has recently been overhauled and returned to the colours it wore after the Second World War.
Our discounted Early Bird Tickets for the show are still available to purchase online; head to www.shuttleworth.org/best-of-british-2024/
https://www.shuttleworth.org/product/be ... tish-2024/

(With the Fighter Aviation Engineering Ltd Tempest & Electra already previously announced for Shuttleworth shows later in the season, I had been hoping MV293 might be added too - though I hope the display is more like the Navwyings Seafire than the Rolls-Royce PRXIX from last year).

Nice to see at the 'Best of British' show. Though I suppose India was under British rule post WWII

Vampire T11 (WZ507) added...
Air Show Announcement!
We are thrilled to announce the Vampire T.11 will be displaying at our Best of British Air Show on the 12th May.
This two-seat training variant of the DH115 is the only remaining airworthy aircraft of its type in the UK, and has been a regular performer at British air shows for decades.
Having not flown at Shuttleworth for many years, it will be fitting to see it take to the skies above Old Warden once again during our Diamond Jubilee air show season.
Head to www.shuttleworth.org/best-of-british-2024/ to book your tickets.
Excellent addition. :star_struck:

HAC Fury added...
Air Show Announcement!
We are delighted to announce a Shuttleworth first, as the world's only airworthy Hawker Fury Mk.I, K5674, will be displaying at our Best of British Air Show on Sunday 12th May.
Delivered to RAF Tangmere in 1936, this aircraft was the personal mount of Flying Officer Frederick Rosier of No. 43 Squadron until the squadron was re-equipped with Hurricanes in early 1939. With a number of RAF Furies becoming surplus, this aircraft was transferred to the South African Air Force in 1941 where it was written off due to a forced landing.
Discovered on a farm in Pretoria in 1994, K5674 was returned to the UK, restored and flew again in July 2012. Today the aircraft is operated by the Historic Aircraft Collection and is based at nearby Duxford.

Fantastic! I have yet to get a decent pic of the Fury. Infact, in all the time that this fighter has been on these shores, I have actually only ever seen it the once.

Blenheim added to the line-up - that was a highlight for me at the "Special Operations" show last year - hopefully it'll be similarly excellent this year...

There are a few photos around online of the painted fuselage - wings and engine still missing.

The first mention of a Lancaster appearance at the show is made in the article below - fingers crossed it's out of maintenance in time - the flypasts last year were quite spectacular.

https://www.key.aero/article/shuttlewor ... son-belter

Copied from BBMF Facebook today - it definitely won't be flying for 4th May...
Are you ready for the summer? ☀️🕶️

We certainly are, and we are delighted to announce our 2024 Display Season and where you’ll be able to see our display throughout the summer! As usual, this list is for full displays only, and does not include individual flypasts ✈️

https://bit.ly/2024Displays

We have also been receiving a number of queries from our followers in the Netherlands and Belgium as to whether we will be conducting a series of flypasts on the 4th May this year. This prestigious event always falls early in the BBMF season and we have been delighted to mark their Liberation Day celebrations for the last 2 years. Unfortunately this year, due to scheduled, but extensive, maintenance on the Lancaster this winter (including installation of a new tailplane), the Lancaster will still be in the final stages of completing her winter maintenance in early May. We appreciate that this will be disappointing for those of you in the Netherlands and Belgium, but the maintenance and safety of our aircraft must take priority and we look forward to visiting later in the year as we attend Sanicole Airshow! 🇧🇪🇳🇱

It has been airworthy since 2015 and has flown at quite a number of Shuttleworth events since then.

Looking at ADSB, Gnat G-RORI has just flown a ~7 minute practice display at Old Warden. Coincidence? Maybe wishful thinking on my part - it's been a long time since I've seen a Gnat display, but it would certainly fit "Best of British ".

Still says more to be announced on the website.

I'm guessing that's the Swordfish, it hasn't been been added on the website yet. Still think that should be removed when everything has now probably been announced.

To be fair the website usually says that up until the show day.

Take it with a pinch of salt and if something else is there, then bonus ! :D

Yes, they did it a lot last year. Just not a fan of it. Comes across a little misleading. I'm sure its just them not updating the website but I just think they should get into a routine removing it when the display list is complete.
