A gathering of Moth - Old Warden 8 June 2024

Post by Blackbird »

To describe Saturday's fly-in as lacklustre probably qualifies me for a job in the diplomatic corps. Yes, the weather didn't help, but it wasn't that bad either. There was just the one Moth present (hence the title), albeit it has an interesting history. None of the Shuttleworth Moths or other De Havilland types were present. Anyway, here is what there was.

This aircraft was previously on display at the RAF Museum in Hendon. It has recently been sold into private ownership and restored to airworthiness. What a great achievement and a change to it being the other way round!

And the very smart Navy Wings Chippie.

Thanks for looking.

Wot?! Only ONE Moth, of any type? Geez, how disappointing for you, Andrew, because I know how much you looked forward to this event. There must be dozens within spitting distance of this OW.

Your images of the attendees, however, are very nice. Hopefully a better year next year.
Cheers,

George

Interesting story about the Moth, I hadn't realised that, thank you! Belgian Chipmunk was marked as OO-PMS.

If you search online, you'll find quite a bit more of the history. How long did you stay for? I called it a day around 2.15.

Did anyone here go on Sunday? Saturday was very disappointing although you can't say we didn't get value for money, as it didn't cost anything!!

I popped in for a couple of hours on Sunday morning and there was a steady trickle of visitors. By the time I left there were 4 Tiger Moths (not including the CFG), a Gipsy Moth, a Leopard Moth,a Puss Moth and a Hornet Moth plus three Chipmunks. A non-DH rarity was a Tri-Kis G-BZDR.

I'm glad they didn't charge you for that Andy, in any case I think opening a wallet and a moth flying out, would earn you credit for doubling the attendees!

Nice Beavers! Lovely shots of what was there.

All credit to you Andy, the Gipsy Moth looked really nice. But in the end I couldn't justify the runout on Sunday, weather didn't look too clever either. Although in hindsight Sunday was a better turnout, never mind, there's always tomorrow. Thanks for sharing with us.

I stretched it out for 35 minutes, left after the all red Chipmunk flew through, about 1:15. Then popped across to Duxford.

I think it was the uncertain weather which affected this event. Moth owners, and light aircraft owners generally, are very wary of indifferent weather forecasts.
I'm wanting to go to the flyin at Priory Farm, Tibenham this coming Sunday; given good weather it's alway an excellent day out. But the forecast isn't great so perhaps I'll find an alternative, indoor, event. There is a model railway show.
