Bimbling Around London 2024 - *UPDATE 4 - 24Nov24*
Monday: 12th August 2024
What with rail/tube strikes, Extinction Rebellion/Just Stop Oil/Free Palestine demonstrations etc., it’s been over 10 months since my last Bimble around London so when I booked a hotel room (half price, no refund) for an overnight stay on Monday, there was no indication or inkling that it would turn into the hottest day of the year. Why Monday?. In the past, London has been relatively quiet, tourist/visitor wise, on a Monday but I hadn’t factored in the school holidays. It was heaving. Due more to the humidity than heat and old age, I didn’t get to bimble to most of the locations I wanted to visit. Next time.
Liverpool Street Station, City of London.
A permanent art installation consisting of highly reflective spheres linked with twisting metal cords called ’Infinite Accumulation’ by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, has been installed in the plaza between Liverpool Street Station and the entrance to the Liverpool Street Elizabeth Line underground entrance.
Ludgate Hill, City of London.
Over Saturday night, Sunday morning, a new Banksy art work of swimming piranhas appeared in a City of London Police sentry box on Ludgate Hill, just a short walk from St Paul’s Cathedral. A Banksy installation that’s not going to get nicked or vandalised as the City of London Corporation, who own the police box, installed barriers around it and there were two security guards hovering nearby.
All Hallows Staining Church, nr Fenchurch Street, London EC3.
A short walk from Fenchurch Street Station are the remains of the 14th Century All Hallows Staining (meaning brick built) Church. Survived the Great Fire of London in 1666 but collapsed in 1671 when the foundations gave way and was rebuilt in 1674. The church was demolished in 1870 leaving the tower standing which survived the second world war although buildings around it didn’t and was then surrounded by office blocks in the 1950’s. Survived the demolition of those office blocks to be surrounded again by a new build 36-storey office block
Butlers Wharf, Shad Thames SE1: Monday 12th August 2024.
Tied up opposite Butlers Wharf, next to Tower Bridge, was the Motor Yacht ‘SCOUT’. 63.72M long with rooms for 10 guests and 21 crew. Built in the Netherlands, and delivered to its current owner in 2019 at a cost of US$85 million. The owner has a passion for dogs and animal welfare hence the Great Dane golden statue on the forecastle.
Covent Garden, City of Westminster, London WC2: Monday 12th August 2024.
A temporary art installation of 40 inflatable ‘floating clouds’, called ‘Little Cloud World’ by Los Angeles-based artists Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III - FriendsWithYou, are on display in and around Covent Garden Market Buildings. It runs until the 1st October.
Rather than lugging around a heavy camera and lens in the hot and humid conditions, I was using my lightweight shirt pocket-friendly Sony RX100M6 with its 20.1MP sensor and 24-200mm equivalent zoom lens.

Bank Holiday Bimble Around London - 26th August 2024
I took advantage of the nice Bank Holiday Monday weather and a cheapish hotel room to spend the day/evening wandering around giving my Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G ultra-wide-angle APS-C Lens a bit of a work out as I’ve had it a while but not used it much. Nothing special as I was just seeing what I could and couldn’t get away with from using the lens. In the order taken.
Piccadilly Circus, City of Westminster.
Eros or The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain has been surrounded by a temporary, one week only, art installation by British-Nigerian artist, Yinka Ilori MBE, called “Good Things Come to Those Who Wait”
Quadrant Arcade, Regent Street. W1B.
Hidden Elephant, Floral Court, Covent Garden, WC2E.
30 St Mary Axe, City of London, EC3A.
More popularly known as The Gherkin, plus airliner, looking up from Bury Street.
St Helen's Church, Bishopsgate, WC3A.
Dating from the 13th-century, St Helen’s Church is surrounded by glass sided tower blocks which, when the sun shines, creates a nice mottled effect on the church from the reflected light.
Tower Hill Memorial, Trinity Gardens, Tower Hill, EC3.
The Falklands War memorial in Trinity Gardens. In the background is the façade of the old Port of London Authority Building.
Trafalgar Square, City of Westminster, WC2N.
Both fountains are fenced off with scaffolding around them as cleaning and maintenance was taking place.
Palace of Westminster, SW1A.
With blue sky and sunshine all day, I had hoped for a spectacular sunset but the clouds rolled in and spoiled that idea.
Wilder Walk, Soho, W1B.
Piccadilly Theatre, Denman St, Soho, W1D.
Infinity Chamber, Conduit Court, Covent Garden, WC2.
Selfie in the Infinity Chamber.
Slingsby Place, Covent Garden, WC2E.
‘Little Cloud World’, Covent Garden, WC2.
London Graphic Centre, Mercer Street, Covent Garden, WC2H.
180 sq.m mural on the wall of the London Graphic Centre by Rob Lowe aka Supermundane.
York & Clifton Mansions (once named London Mansions) St Giles High Street, WC2H.
Sony α6500 CSC +Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G ultra-wide-angle APS-C Lens.

El Galeón Andalucía, St Katharine Docks, London E1W - 29th September 2024
I had intended to go down to London on the 23rd September for the arrival of El Galeón Andalucía as it was due to go through Tower Bridge turn around before entering St Katharine Docks. The stormy weather that day and the wrong type of rain on the train tracks put paid to that.
El Galeón Andalucía is a replica of a six-decked 17th century Spanish galleon and was built by the Fundacion Nao Victoria and launched in 2009. Due to remain in dock until the 6th October and will probably leave on the high tide which is at 16.40.
Pool of London, Tower Bridge - 29th September 2024.
The German Corvette Magdeburg/F261(commissioned 22 September 2008) tied up next to HMS Belfast.

Hi Brian,
Nice pictures again but can I ask, with the evening shots of the Andalucía, did you use a tripod or were they all taken hand hold?
Cheers

Re: Bimbling Around London 2024 - *UPDATE 3 - 29Sep24*
Hand held, I cant remember the last time I used a tripod on a night shoot. I did have a problem because it was very windy/gusty, and trying to rain, and trying to hold the camera steady for a 1/6th sec exposure was a bit challenging.

London Christmas Lights Bimble - 24th November 2024
I wasn’t going to let Storm Burt, with his gale force winds and 40+mph gusts, spoil my annual birthday bimble to London to photograph the Christmas lights. Challenging could be a word used as I battled the crowds and wind as I wandered around the streets of London. All taken with my shirt pocket friendly Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100 M6.
St Pancras International, Euston Road, N1C.
