When I open photos (CR2 files) from their file folder using Windows 11. It automatically brightens them to the point of over exposure.Has anyone else had this problem.Looked at Microsoft forums and seems to be a general problems. Some users suggest switching off HDR but looks like my PC isn’t using HDR.
Never had this problem with Windows 10.

Another vote for FastStone, I've not found any photo it won't open.
Windows 11 though is a different story.

I've seen the same problem in Windows 11 and consequently use FastStone for assessing photos now: if you are a Canon user then the corporate DPP software supplied with the camera also doesn't have an issue.

Interesting I had this problem when i first got my current laptop about a year ago with NEF files I downloaded windows photos legacy and that fixed it up until recently when that developed the same problem. ive download the latest Nikon codec file that didn't fix it but now the windows 11 photo viewer is working fine.

Re: Windows 11 over exposes photos on PC
Interesting problem. It sounds as if Windows 11 is having trouble using the correct settings to display RAW file previews. As the specifics of these vary between manufacturers, using the manufacturers own software or a dedicated bit of software specifically for managing RAW files would be my preference. I have used Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, Nikon's proprietary software and ACDSee but am not a major Windows user, so cannot comment on how these work on Win 11 systems.
Re: Windows 11 over exposes photos on PC
I just use Adobe Bridge for viewing and opening picture files, just find that a lot easier and convenient for opening camera raw etc..
