Bimbling Around London 2025 - 19Jan25

Post by Pen Pusher »

A new year, hotel prices back to pre-Christmas levels and a new camera to try out. You can have the most expensive, technologically advanced camera equipment in the world and still get crap photos if you don’t know how to use it. Nothing was planned for this visit as I was using it to get used to handling and using the Sony A6700 and see what I could and could not get away with. I decided on a night shoot because if it did well in the dark then it should be OK in the daylight. All hand held as usual.

Museum of Shakespeare, Hewett Street, Shoreditch, London, EC2A

Image
01 - Due to open to the public soon, a new museum has been built over the remains of The Curtain Theatre, which opened in 1577, and was home to William Shakespeare’s acting troupe, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, who performed there between 1597 to 1599 and it is believed that Henry V and Romeo and Juliet were first performed at The Curtain Theatre. The stain-glass displays in the entrance display scenes from The Winter's Tale.

Image
02 - Opposite the museum is a large mural depicting scenes from William Shakespeare’s plays.

Image
03 - The vertical ripples in the metal cladding represent folds in a theatre curtain with the outside seating area representing the seating used in the theatre.

04 - A reflective view of the museum.

The Broadgate Tower, 201 Bishopsgate, City of London. EC2M.

Image
05 - A popular Hollywood film location. It appeared in the 2012 James Bond film ‘Skyfall’ where the entrance lobby, bottom left, posed as the entrance to a skyscraper in Shanghai, and the Atrium, with the leaning columns, could be seen in the 2017 film The Hitman’s Bodyguard where Ryan Reynolds was escorting his client Richard E Grant to his car.

21 - It would appear LNER/London North Eastern Railway are one of the sponsors of the Chinese New Year celebrations (year of the Snake) which take place in London on the weekend of the 1st-2nd February, except that King’s Cross station is closed that weekend due to engineering works and all LNER trains start and end at Peterborough with rail replacement buses in place.

The Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square, WC2H

22 - First opened in 1900 as the London Hippodrome, it was used as a venue for circus and variety performances. After many owners, like Bernard Delfont, Peter Stringfellow, and many renovations and makeovers over the years, it reopened as The Hippodrome Casino in 2012.
