Well that's the book off to the printers . . . The RAF Leuchars Airshow in 1989 saw the arrival of the first Operational Tornado F3 “ZE961 “GA” to be based in Scotland and served initially with 43(F) Squadron. Now, some 21 years later, that same aircraft is still proudly serving in the hands of 111(F) Squadron but that aircraft, aircraft type and the Squadron are about to be retired in March 2011.
Squadron Prints Ltd, the well-known Scottish based Aviation Art Company are launching a tribute book to the Tornado F3 – an aircraft that, in a quarter of a century of service, has constantly been on operational duty; served with many famous RAF fighter squadrons; the silent guardian of UK airspace, ever vigilant as it sat poised for launch on Quick Reaction Alert. The aircraft was taken to war in the Gulf, twice, and patrolled the No-Fly Zones in the Balkans and Iraq for years. In the South Atlantic, the Tornado F3 performed an uninterrupted stint of 17 years, concurrent with other operations and training exercises around the world. Every RAF Squadron and unit that operated the F3 plus the Royal Saudi Air Force and Italian Air Force are covered. Exercises, operational deployments, special events and emotions are all portrayed by “F3 people” in this book with the aim of producing a fond commemoration to the aircraft and the people that flew it, maintained it and adored it up close and from afar!
In this book, the men and women of the F3 Force, past and present take you around the world at supersonic speeds with stories of dark nights over the North Sea and hot days above the burning oilfields of Kuwait. From the Baltic coast to a final public bow at the Leuchars Airshow, with the wings swept back and the throttles parked in the “top left corner” ~ never before has the story been told of what it was really like to fly, fix and fight the Tornado F3 whilst based at Coningsby, Leeming, the Falkland Islands and Leuchars.
Recently the Squadron Prints Team consisting of Berry Vissers, Gill Howie and Mark McEwan donated over £10,000 to the RAF Benevolent Fund from the sale of their most recent book “Northern Exposure – the RAF at work in Scotland”. This time the team has been joined by Geoffrey Lee, the world renowned Aviation Photographer and Wg Cdr Justin Reuter RAF (Former F3 Navigator and current serving Officer) to produce a manuscript of anecdotes along with distinctive and colourful photographs from home and abroad, many of which have never previously been published, and at the same time raising funds for RAFA (RAF Association).
TORNADO F3 is a “must have” for anyone associated with the Tornado F3 – from aircrew and ground crew, enthusiasts and model makers, but also for anyone with or without an interest in aviation. £2 from every book sold will go to the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) charity.
Squadron Prints Ltd whose long association with the RAF and the Tornado F3 go back many years are publishing the book. They have produced several books as well as their highly acclaimed series of lithographic prints for almost all the RAF’s Squadrons for well over 30 years.
The book will be launched on the 22nd March, 2011 – the same date that 111(F) Squadron (Tremblers) will disband and see the start of 10 days of farewells to the Mighty Tornado F3 which ceases service on the 31st March, 2011.
Priced at £19.95 (a Postage and packing fee will be added) the book contains 188 pages, and has been brought together by the authors out of a great fondness for the aircraft.

I know I am not alone in my feelings for this aircraft, without doubt, holding it as the worst I ever worked on in 25 years! Looks like a nice book, for a good cause, but I just know I'm gonna be having nightmares and flashbacks tonight having seen those images!
Bugger..............

Is it true as I've heard that the Tornado F3 was near worthless as a fighter?

Not that I am the expert on technical matters I do know that the aircraft held it's own at the last Red Flag it attended but you can read about it in the book!
I must say that it was my personal favourite at airshows

As an airframe-probably. As a weapons platform though (especially BVR) it's rather potent though

Re: Tornado F3: 25 Years of Air Defence
It performed pretty well most times I saw it,we all know what it was designed for,and as far as I know was as good as anything in that role,...over the years various mags have featured theoretical dog fights,F15 V Mig29 etc...and given the likely winner after lengthy analyzation, what a load of cobblers it all was,all the theory in the world is no guarantee of anything...
for my money not too many aircraft have proved that much against a foe of equal quality aircraft & equal quality crew since WW2...
and lets face it,we will never know how the Tornado F3 & Lightning would have done in serious combat

Re: Tornado F3: 25 Years of Air Defence
Comments like "it held its own" aren't among the most flattering epitaphs. Also, if I recall, it was restricted to simple point defence and QRA in the First Gulf War? That is they didn't let it go wandering off to seek out the Iraqi Air Force like the F15s and F16s were doing. The again, I also read at the time that a couple of them saw off an Iraqi threat, I think a couple of SU22s, approaching a couplle of A10s.

Well whether you love the jet or hate it and whether you manage to hold your own or not in certain circumstances, this thread is about a BOOK called "Tornado F3 - 25 years of air defence" and it will still be published on the 22nd March, 2011 regardless of members personal feelings about the Tornado F3. Perhaps a thread about the virtues of the jet can be started elsewhere but this book has some good stories and some amazing never seen before photographs from around the world.

Re: Tornado F3: 25 Years of Air Defence
Being as 22nd March is my birthday,I'll be lobbying for it (or more likely buying it for myself! )
The F3 was developed from the GR version for a specific job at the time, and if it has at any time held its own with out and out dog fighters in exercises,it would be prettty sensational I'd have thought, but whatever...it was a great replacement for the Lightning & Phantom airshow wise, and it was without doubt a beauty to look at!

Re: Tornado F3: 25 Years of Air Defence
Having spotted at and attended the Leuchars Airshows since 1986/87 I have come to really have a soft spot for the Tornado F.3. I was a big fan of the Phantom before that but there was just something about the F.3s that made me a little more excited. I will if possible be purchasing this book as it looks like a fitting tribute.
Good luck with it to all at Squadron Prints.

nothing to do with its ability as a fighter / interceptor. It was held in point defence for two reasons.
1. This is what the F3 was designed for in the first place , point defence and interception of allied airspace.
2. Issue with compatibility of IFF with some coalition radars, both aircraft and Sam(though namely one called Patriot) although a blue on blue did occur 10 years later which did involve more than IFF issues there were several other incidents with bugging F3's and false returns.
F3's with skyflash were potent defenders
Re: Tornado F3: 25 Years of Air Defence
Just had a sneak preview of a few recently printed pages of the Tornado F3 book and I am extremely happy! The colours and quality of the printing work is fantastic and I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished product. Five weeks to go tomorrow before the book will be released to the public and I am excited already! I can’t wait.
Re: Tornado F3: 25 Years of Air Defence
I know this question is a bit short notice but are you going to be able to fit in a snap of the new painted Tornado F.3 disbandment/ retirement scheme in the book? It'll probably be the only chance of a picture of this paint scheme I'll get.
Re: Tornado F3: 25 Years of Air Defence
Unknow 74: unfortunately, that might be a little bit difficult - the finished books (188 pages, over 400 pictures and illustrations) got delivered today. On this very same day the (nearly finished) special scheme rolled out of the paint shop at RAF Leuchars. I guess you have to get a Squadron Print to see that scheme. The books look fantastic though.

We have a good printer and they pulled out all the stops to get this done quickly!
Re: Tornado F3: 25 Years of Air Defence
Is your printer as fast as a Tornado then? Will look forward to seeing it anyway.
Re: Tornado F3: 25 Years of Air Defence
Can I just add a few personal comments on the book itself.
It has a heap of fantastic photos from all sorts of things: ops, exercises, weapon firings, mixed formations and even a few of the Saudi F.3's! The quality of the book is outstanding and huge credit to Squadron Prints for putting this together in such a short time. Some great stories from all walks of life who worked on and in the F.3 and it's great to read the view points from those who worked with the jet.
This is a cracking book and for under £20, very good value too.
