Exercise Elder Forest

Post by Hurriquin »

With all the recent doom and gloom regarding our armed forces, a chum and I have been reminiscing about the "good old days" of the Cold War, and what fun we had as kids watching all the aircraft during the regular Exercise Elder Forest, where our Allies tested our readiness in case of a Soviet air attack. Does anyone have any photos that would accompany this trip down memory lane...

Could be extended to other Cold War Exercises...

Thanks thats just the sort of thing I was looking for. I remember seeing A-10s cavorting around Suffolk and Phantoms out of Watisham returning after various tussles. Happy days!

Was due to head up to Leuchars during Elder Forest '88 for a bit of spotting and to see a little bit of the action. Unfortunately got up that morning in question - bucketing in rain, so guess what, never got there :wall: . never did get up to see any of the Exercises due to School, College, work etc.

Great photos everyone - really brought back memories, and got me searching through some old log books.

Remember visiting Waddington on 14th April 1987 whilst one of the major exercises was taking place. Logged the following (the foreign visitors arrived for a lunch stop):
