This could set the 'cat amongst the pigeons' depending on whose plane got shot down!

Confirmed Russian.

Russians (RT) saying it was a SAM and the aircraft was inside Syria.

Just the sort of stupid act NATO didn't want Turkey to do.
Russia are claiming it was shot down by a SAM or ground-fire , not by AAM.
Thankfully it would appear from reports that the crew safely ejected.

Edited to add.....AJ reporting that Turkish media are claiming that one of the crew has been captured by Syrian rebels.

While I don't support what Russia are doing of course, I don't want to imagine what might happen to that pilot...

I'm not so sure about that. I have had the feeling for a while now that NATO is spoiling for a fight.

I know that there are differences between the sides regarding the ultimate future of Syria, but whilst the current emphasis is on defeating ISIS and the Russians have recently made significant contribution to that aim, it seems an odd time to try and destroy any chance of co-operation. But then again, the problem with NATO is partly that what one member wants and what other member states want aren't necessarily the same thing.

Apparently , Turkish media have shown footage from the Syrian rebels concerning the capture of the crewman , and the logo on the footage would indicate it's the FSA.

Turks claiming "the downed foreign jet was issued 10 warnings in five minutes".......should be easy to prove or disprove , then.
Russia are still saying they can prove it never entered Turkish airspace.

A supposed radar track has appeared on Twitter.

If true it shows the Su-24 crossed a 2 mile wide stretch of Turkish airspace.... Unless it was doing under 30mph it wouldn't have been in Turkish airspace for the 5 minutes needed for the supposed warnings....

Do we know officially if it was shot down by Turkish F-16's or on the ground by the Turkish Army as I'm seeing both mentioned across news websites? I hope the remaining pilot manages to find safety somewhere but I fear for the captured pilot and ramifications if they are harmed or killed.

Turkish authorities are still saying F-16s ; Russian authorities are still saying ground-fire ( not specifying organic or SAM ).....none of the footage I've seen shows either missile trails or other aircraft in the vicinity , also no sign of counter-measures being deployed.

The published radar track (now sourced from Turkish armed forces) shows a CAP leaving station and intercepting.

From the Daily Fail!

This image released by the Turkish Army reportedly shows the flight radar tracking the movement of the downed Russian Sukhoi Su-24 jet, showing where it entered Turkish air space and where it went down.

From the BBC coverage

One of Russian pilots dead on landing'
Posted at 12:14

A Syrian rebel group says one of the Russian pilots who ejected from his downed warplane was dead on landing.

AP quotes Jahed Ahmad of the 10th Brigade in the Coast as saying the two Russian crew members had tried to parachute into a government-held area after they ejected, but came under fire from members of his group.

Earlier, Reuters reported it had seen video from a rebel group that appeared to show one of the pilots immobile and badly wounded on the ground.

If this is true, this is an interesting insight into the moderate Syrian rebel groups that the west is backing. Shooting at people parachuting from a downed aircraft is surely pretty dirty behaviour by any combatants?

Exactly. Whether the Russians listen out on a second universal frequency of course is another matter. Crossing a tiny bit of airspace and knowing it was Russian isn't exactly a strong reason to open fire. But if it's happened before and there have been warnings before, then it shows the Turks mean business about preventing incursions.

Whilst the rebels obviously want IS destroyed and the Russians are helping here, we must not forget they also want Assad gone, which the Russians don't!
