Piper Operation Cobra

Post by Sultan of Wings »

Invasion of Normandy.
Operation Cobra June 1944.

The story:
Operation Cobra was the code name for an offensive launched by the First United States Army (Lieutenant General Omar Bradley) seven weeks after the D-Day landings, during the Normandy Campaign of World War II. The intention was to take advantage of the distraction of the Germans by the British and Canadian attacks around Caen, in Operation Goodwood[12] and break through the German defenses that were penning in his troops, while the Germans were unbalanced. Once a corridor had been created, the First Army would then be able to advance into Brittany, rolling up the German flanks once free of the constraints of the bocage country

This is the full program (in French) with pictures and descriptions.

There will be lots, aerial and ground.

They really worked hard putting this event together.

The aerial shows will extend some kilometers along the beaches.

Not a boring minute!

The event drew no less than a crowd of 150,000 scattered on 5 kilometers of beaches. Most came to see the Airbus A380 original prototype F-WWOW flying formation with Patrouille de France, followed by an impressive 8 minutes solo flying display. Airbus Chief test Pilot Christophe Cail was in command of the aircraft.

The weather was really good, there was not a drop of rain.

VIDEOS. Relive the Piper Operation Cobra Air Show
Apotheosis this Sunday, August 4 with the air show Jullouville. Combat aircraft, aerobatics, Airbus A380 and Patrouille de France animated the sky above the beach.

Jullouville Beach has never been as full as this Sunday, August 4, for the Piper Operation Cobra Air Show . Massed on the sand and on the promenade, the public attended for more than 3 hours the spectacle of the planes that flew over the sea.

The sound of his planes , we only hear in the historical movies. But "this is the kind of sound that was heard above these same beaches in 1944," recalls the commentary Bernard Chabbert, a sort of bible of aeronautics, as we commemorate this weekend " the installation in Jullouville of the high command that oversaw the liberation of Europe ".
