Today the museum should have been hosting its first Indoor Aeroboot / Aerojumble event of the year.

A Poll has just been added to the museum’s twitter feed concerning when to host the next Aeroboot / Aerojumble Sale. The options suggested are:

With Cockpit-Fest if held

Sale after lockdown ends

Wait for October’s indoor sale

Another suggestion

I couldn’t see how to create a poll on here, but feedback is appreciated!

How is the museum and it’s staff coping financially, Howard, with the complete lock down and temporary closure?

Hi Rob, it's good to hear from you and thanks for your enquiry.

For the most part the charity is coping OK. We operate a fairly robust reserves policy to help in unforeseen situations like this, but it's a big shock when you have to start using those funds.

The staff have been Furloughed and we're operating on an essential maintenance/checking footing with museum members going in to check on things like building alarms; alarms on the waste treatment plant etc. We have been quite lucky that we've had good support from our local MP and his staff offering guidance; also from a range of Associations that we're part of; and especially from Newark & Sherwood District Council who paid our government Retail Grant really quickly. Various key dates and actions are highlighted in this page on our website.

http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/Coronavirus_Update_03

For NAM another big challenge is perhaps yet to come; because like many similar organisations we rely on good footfall during the spring, summer and autumn to help build sufficient reserves for the winter. So that's why we're using our Just Giving page and Easy Fund Raising page to try and keep some funds coming in now, to help ease challenges in the future.

https://www.justgiving.com/newarkairmuseum

http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/Easy_Fund_Raising

We're also starting to try and hit the ground running when things start to re-open and have set-up special offers etc. for the Museum Shop and the like.

http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/Re-Open_Discount_Offer

There's an occasional bonus as well; the people who were briefly on site yesterday doing the checks had a 'brilliant' flyby from pair of F-15s, as noted in the low-flying log! A comment from them on Twitter "… First time covered us in jet shadow!”

http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/NAM-Low-Fly-Log

I trust that you and your family are keeping well and I look forward to chat sometime on the other side of the lockdown! Look after that Wyvern cockpit project!

Details added to the museum website about the unit markings that are going to be applied to the F-100 Super Sabre later this year.

Here’s hoping for some interest from the 494th TFS at Lakenheath!

The physical F-100 work was pre-lockdown, with the current markings planning work being done remotely and within the government's lockdown guidelines.

That said, we're developing strategies and potential volunteer work routines that will allow the museum to return to some sort of normality when the current regulations are eased. We're fortunate to have a 16 acres site that provides some natural distancing opportunities; official visit routes based on a one way system are also being plotted; staggered access to the shop etc.

Challenging times for everyone, but also a situation that give sites the chance to innovate.

We still have our Virtual Tour for those who are really missing their visits!

https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=zKWExQPSSgV

There's even a quiz running on Twitter at the moment with some aircraft IDs to solve from the tour.

Good choice on markings for the F-100D , and I’m all for a bit of nose art to brighten up the camo.
Will the nose Art be hand painted on, Howard, or will the museum commission a decal?

hi Rob and thanks for the feedback.

The nose art etc. will be decals, sadly we no longer have any volunteers with the skills to do intricate hand painted markings. The decal sets have now been sized and will be ordered quite soon.

The publicity around the markings has prompted an interesting international request from Spain!

"Dear Newark Air Museum staff,

Congratulations about the repaint of the F-100 Super Sabre, the 48th TFW paint scheme it's going to be incredible!

Here in Spain we have the wreckage of another F-100D Super Sabre, also from the USAFE 48th TFW 494th TFS RAF Lakenheath, its bureau number is
0-52838 (55-2838). I wonder if you have any pictures of this plane in the Museum Archives."

We'll be checking the archive when we get out of lockdown, but I thought it might be worth a post in case anyone about these parts could oblige.

The person making the enquiry also sent an interesting photo that been shared on our Twitter timeline. "Attached a photo of the tail fin, still holds the remains of the LT code letters."

Our initial step back to normality starts today, with our first few members of staff coming back after furlough. This is part of a slow process, but this will change a bit more tomorrow with our new Order & Collect system starting as well.

That's good news NAMUpdater.

I live a few hours drive away but plan to make the trip to the museum as soon as you re-open. With Zoos and Theme Parks opening in July, very much hoping it won't be long now!

Thanks for the feedback and we look forward to being able to welcome all visitors to our 16 acre site. Whilst we have a good amount of space to work with that also can present its own challenges, especially when trying to manage visitor flows in a safe manner; you seem to solve one issue only to create another.

At the moment we don't have a re-opening date for the whole site, but when we do we will let people know. I suspect that we will also have to cap the numbers each day but at least we will be open and back earning some income for this registered charity!
