Trumpeter 1/48 F-100D Super Sabre

Post by DerekF »

Next up, my attempt at Trumpeter's F-100D. I had built Monogram's version as the famous Triple Zilch years ago and I fancied another go. This time as a Thunderbirds aircraft. It's a fairly simple kit that didn't take long to put together. The metal finished I struggled with but ended up with Vallejo Steel and Aluminium. The decals fit well but crack and tear easily and it took three sessions to put the decals on. I used the kit's alternative markings to provide some repair patches. Anyway, here it is.

That metal finish is very convincing Derek. I'm an absolute sucker for aerobatic team kits, and find them very hard to resist. In fact, unsurprisingly I have one of these. Also unsurprisingly I've had it a few years and all I can tell you about it is what the box looks like.

Seeing this is an inspiration to convince myself to give it a push back into building models again.

Thanks for posting, as always.

The metal bits have that "been around a while" look that is critical to credibility of the model. Fair play on the decals too, big decals put me off schemes. Great job!

Yes, how did you achieve that look on the metal?

Sprayed Vallejo steel and aluminium with random touches of dark grey and black. Sprayed at a low pressure.

Is that the full set Derek? They look fab

Imagine seeing an aerobatics team flying the F-4
You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter.

Not quite a full set. I'm missing the F-84F that they used between the F-84G and F-100 and the F-105 that they used for only six shows.

Question for you Derek...I have tried many team aircraft before and always had problems with being able to see paint colour coming through the decal....Yours are fantastic how do you get over the above problem ?? I have the old Monogram F-16 Thunderbird to do and a 1/32 revell Patrol Swiss F-5 to do but to worried about the paint job and decal problem to give them a try.....Many thanks in advance mate...Keep modelling !!
