Details are on the Canon website.

https://www.canon.co.uk

New lenses released this time include a 100-500 L.

So the R6 + 100-500 L look like they may be the future. Sad as I am to say it, it looks like optical viewfinders are history.

I wouldn't mind a go with that R6 and new lens though.

There are reports that in video mode the camera overheats after 20 minutes in 8K EAW or HEVC. If you shut the camera off for 10 minutes to cool down then you only get 3 more minuets of 8K.

DSLRs are history as well.

The electronic view finder's on the new Canon's are made by Sony.

I ordered the R6 and battery grip yesterday. Might add the R5 to my kit next year. Mirrorless is the future.

I will still keep my Leica M10 though. No mirror there as well, but an optical rangefinder.

I do not miss mirrors.

Congrats for purchasing an early Christmas present for yourself, eirik.
I considered the R5 (as you & I discussed on another thread) but I'm not into video and I doubt that I'll ever use/need some of the features of the R5. Here in Australia, the average retail price is ~ AU$7,000 which I cannot justify, and would probably result in divorce proceedings. I decided on a Canon 5DIV which will be fine for me at <40% of the R5 price and, IMO, represented good value-for-money.

I look forward to seeing some of your images taken with the new gear.

Interesting that for years I've heard DSLR users say that they will never go mirrorless because they couldn't live with the battery life. Now people are queuing up to buy these two canons with atrocious battery life when compared to just about all other mirrorless cameras and the batteries cost over a £100.

I have used the Canon EOS R for a while, and I must say I was worried about battery life. In pratice it turns out that it is not that bad. At airshows I always used it with a battery grip and two batteries. After a full day at Duxford my batteries would still have around 35% charge left after having shot arond 3000 photos. The trick was to just leave the screen reversed (off) and use the EVF for everething inluding previewes, menu etc. On bright sunny days this is actually preferred as you more or less eliminate the problem of bright light hitting the screen.

The R has now been traded in, and I am waiting for the R6 to arrive.

On a busy day at Duxford, I can come away with over 400+ images and still have 50% battery life showing which official tests state that the battery life for my a6500 is 310 images with the viewfinder and 350 if using the LED screen. Like eirik I turn the LCD screen off and between aircraft movements, I have the camera turned off. No point having the auto focus chirping away and draining power if you are not taking any photos.

Yep, I know the official figures are pointless. I regularly get 1500 shots from my Panasonic G9 on one battery and I usually leave my LCD on. Reviewers still quote them and on that basis the two new Canons come out pretty badly.

The R5 with around 45MP per image and IBIS is going to eat away far more than the R at battery life. Still getting one though!

What's different about the batteries that they are so expensive? are non-Canon ones available?

The battery life is a challenge.

I think camera manufacturers say to themselves "if we are charging a lot for the camera, it stands to reason we can charge a lot for the battery". No dig at Cannon here, they all do it. It would be interesting to see what the production price for a battery is and whether the OEM batteries are made in the same factories as the copies.

Multiple outlets with inside information are reporting that Canon is holding back and/or delaying shipments of the new EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras as a result of the overheating issues that early reviews have been reporting. This could be a sign that a recall is in the works.

While a recall might seem like a drastic step given how transparent Canon has been about the thermal limitations in the EOS R5 and EOS R6, both Canon Rumors and EOSHD are reporting that Canon is shipping far fewer units than expected, and has delayed the second allocation of cameras “significantly.”

One user who had an unrelated issue was told by Canon that the second allocation of EOS R5 cameras isn’t due until November—an unprecedented 4-month delay—while Andrew Reid at EOSHD was told that one of the largest photo retailers in Germany received only 5 units for their Berlin store, and 70 units total for the entire country, with similar reports from other major electronics chains.

There are a few ways to interpret this information, but as Craig from CR told us over email, drastic shipping delays like the ones that he’s been hearing about from retailers and his other sources seem to point towards a recall. After confirming to PetaPixel that he’s been hearing similar information to what’s been reported by EOSHD, he said:

In my mind, if it was just a firmware release, why delay shipping more? There must be a hardware change coming and they’re reducing the number of recall repairs.

According to an anonymous source, Canon is working on “multiple solutions” to the overheating concerns, and will have “a full statement and plan in the coming weeks.” The question now: will that plan involve simply releasing a firmware update? Launching a hardware solution? Or will Canon choose to recall the cameras that have already shipped?

Many Canon fans believe the overheating issue has been overblown by some early reviewers, but as pressure mounts on Canon to do something about it, those same users may find themselves waiting a very long time for their pre-order to arrive.

There are two reports of the Sony A7sIII's overheating but they were pre-production models sent out for testing. As far as I'm aware, there are no reports of production models overheating. So far.
