Red Arrows flypast of Edinburgh as part of VJ Day

Post by Euan Buchan »

A Red Arrows flypast will be one of the few physical events to mark Victory in Japan (VJ) Day this year as commemorations move online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
An online service of remembrance and a concert, as well as a two-minute silence will lead the commemoration of the 75th anniversary on 15 August.
VJ Day saw the end of the conflict in Asia and brought the Second World War to a close.
Claire Armstrong, chief executive of Legion Scotland, said: “Whilst VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, many thousands of Armed Forces personnel were still engaged in bitter fighting in the Far East.”
“This campaign saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Second World War and in some of the harshest conditions.”
She added that VJ Day will pay tribute not only to the British forces but the Allied and Commonwealth forces, “without whom the defeat of Japan would not have been possible”.
Among the events planned is a message from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon thanking the Second World War generation, and a two-minute silence.
The Red Arrows will perform a flypast of Edinburgh and Legion Scotland will be issuing medallions in honour of those who made a contribution to the war effort.

Not just Edinburgh:
Then in the first such flight since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, The Red Arrows will conduct a UK wide flypast tribute over Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and London with its path including The Royal Hospital Chelsea, home to three Burma Star recipients.

Any idea yet of a time for Edinburgh? Just have to find out what route they’re taking as well?

I've heard that they'll approach from the East and be over Edinburgh Castle at 11.30L, then turning left in the direction of Prestwick (to avoid EDI airport).

Doesn't seem to have been a specific NOTAM issued for it yet ( not on the NATS website, anyway )

Individually for Saturday there's :
B) FROM: 20/08/15 17:15
C) TO: 20/08/15 17:35
E) NO MOVEMENTS IN BLACKBUSHE ATZ DUE RED ARROWS FLYPAST.
And :
B) FROM: 20/08/15 11:45
C) TO: 20/08/15 12:15
E) FORMATION FLYPAST WI 2NM RADIUS 534343N 0014400W (ALREWAS, STAFFORDSHIRE)
( Which may or may not be RAFAT )

No mention of Edinburgh in that NOTAM.

Makes it look like their 'UK Tour' is starting at Prestwick & taking in Belfast & Cardiff only.

I reckon it will be a 1700 flypast at Chelsea from the Blackbushe NOTAM

will cycle up there rain permitting (100k round trip and not in 1 hour!)

That'll be because when I checked the NATS site I think I only checked 'EGTT' instead of also checking 'EGPX' ( which covers Scotland ).....oops!! :flushed:

Still not seen a NOTAM for the flight to Prestwick - via Edinburgh?

Don't mean for that to sound like
no one's (forum member) published said info - rather that I cannot seem to find one. Checked the NOTAM website, but don't see it.

The route is up on Notam map for Prestwick, Belfast, Cardif. I thought It might be worth a trip to the lakes to catch them, but they will be nowhere near there.
"Nice pics mate" comments only! No criticism please.

Equipment: Camera, Lens, Goretex Y fronts.

My point was that it would be nice for one of these flypasts to actually be over some of the other bigger cities in England for a change.
