RW382 in US markings

Post by Archer »

Just saw a post on LinkedIn showing Spitfire RW382 from the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar in a nice new US scheme: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ras-comp ... 87616-pW2Q

It's different to yet another RAF scheme, so I like it!

Had to laugh at the comment below the photo
Terry Lewis
It looks like a very high quality paint job, but honestly US Star and bar on a truly British icon😩 What next, RAF scheme on P-51 Mustang.
Hopefully it was humour...

Or maybe he didn't realise that the Mustang first flew operationally in RAF markings!!

... and was designed in response to a request from the British Purchasing Commission.

Who was it that famously replied "and what colour is your Spitfire?"

Nice to see RAAF and USAAC Spitfire paint jobs in the UK. Breaks up the monotony of RAF schemes.

Don’t say that, you’ll upset the forum purists

Hahaha, yea I know I will. But hey something different is nice to see. I wish sometimes the folk who own warbirds in Australia change them up for some other schemes.

If you’ve only got one Spitfire in a country, it makes sense to paint it in a local scheme. I guess the UK Spitfire population is big enough that a bit of diversity is possible.😉

There are two ex-RNZAF fighters in NZ (not flying due to a legal dispute but otherwise airworthy) in US/Chinese markings :-(
Two of the Spitfires are in markings of NZ pilots, the third is other RAF.

I think the scheme diversity is great! However as nice as it is I was a bit surprised that BHH chose a Grey Nurse scheme for one of their twintubs - from a UK punter POV what would you rather choose - that scheme or an RAF one? I suspect most would want the green/brown and RAF roundels...

Except there are no two-seaters currently flying in that scheme since ARCo repainted PV202 about 10 years back

I like the Grey Nurse scheme, and don't forget people travel from all over the world to fly in the Spitfires at BHHH.

Have to say I was a bit unsure about the new scheme on TE308, in particular the shark mouth, but I am warming to it - probably why I think RW382 looks fine and dandy!
Looking forward to the Red Star Spitfire PT879 flying.
