Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
Seriously? That can't be the finished article surely. If so, why did they bother?
Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
Perhaps a job lot of black paint?
Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
Has someone been watching Top Gun? Thinking MIGs fly in black?

Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
Its not the most exciting scheme in the world, but at least its something different.
Presumably the idea is that its a hi-viz scheme?

Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
Agreed - when was the last time you saw a black all over fighter of any type?

Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
Apologies if I'm asking a dumb question, but why would an aggressor scheme need to be high viz?? Surely something sneakier is more realistic?
Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
Ant, the original idea of the aggressors goes back to Vietnam War when the USAF and USN realised that their kill ratio had declined significantly since the Korean War. The idea was to train up elite crews and in turn use them to train up their squadrons. The powers that be realised that training against the same type of a/c you flew wasn't the best and so introduced DACT Dissimilar Air Combat Training) - the USN used F-5s and A-4s. As the "enemy" were using Soviet fighters in Soviet colours the introduction of the aggressor colours developed.
I suppose when the RAF put the idea of their aggressor scheme we all hoped it would be one of the Flanker schemes - but at least black makes a change.

Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
One of the early U.K. based prototypes of the Typhoon was painted all over black as I recall. I think it was for hi-viz purposes.

OMG - I have been wearing one of those dayglow things over my black leather jacket on my motorcycle!

Yep, they knackered that as well. Wasn't in a bad scheme prior to that.

Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
Typhoon Force Commander said during an interview in Aviation News over a year ago they will be painting one, and that its not going to be too different. Suggestion was rather like the last scheme on the Lightnings at Binbrook.
And as 9 Sqn has other taskings aside from aggressor work, IE QRA, that is why its not very radical.
I suppose folks will still moan either way...

Fair enough, never knew about that one, but then again, I never really did take much interest in Tonka's, and after about 2000, not much interest in modern mil stuff...up until the boredom of Covid kicked in.
Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
A nice splinter or digi-cam paint job would have been different - this just looks like a Valley jet...

There is also the USAF Aggressor F-16 known as "Wraith". Link also features a black Fulcrum.

Re: RAF "aggressor" Typhoon
And how do you define that? Lightnings thankfully never went completely grey and ended their days in 4 different schemes.Binbrook 01 wrote: ↑Fri 11 Sep 2020, 10:59 pmSuggestion was rather like the last scheme on the Lightnings at Binbrook.

As we all know ZH558 was painted black to hide 490 "pressure transducers" which had been attached.

I Suppose its better than nothing. Awaits the other grumpy old mens club replies !
It arrived at Kinloss on Friday afternoon anyhow.
As for EE Lightning schemes, growing up near Binbrook had its moments from 1970 - 1988
