And the German Starfighter - you can practically hear it, it's a great shot
Yes, fab side on shot of the Hooter landing, and a nice shot of the F.6 Lightning as well, '87 being the final RIAT for both types in squadron service (excl BAe sending one of the Warton F.6's to RIAT for the static park in '91)

Abingdon 1988 Battle of Britain at Home Day. These are from the arrivals and practice day on the Friday, the show sadly didn't take place following the tragic fatal loss of the two crew in the RAF Phantom after it crashed in practice after failing to recover from a loop and hitting the ground. We were just leaving the airfield as the Phantom arrived and I never saw the crash thankfully, although I noticed the fire as we passed the airfield to the south, not even thinking about a crash until we saw the news when we got home.
It would have been an exceptional static line up with no less than eight US Navy jets from the USS Theodore Roosevelt arriving through Friday morning, the Viking somewhat undignified as it ran out of runway and went through the fence onto the road and had to be towed in with a hole in the nose. It was my first sighting of Tomcat, Intruder, Prowler and Viking and luckily I got onto base with the help of Tiang Shia, so managed to get some shots.

Last one for tonight, neg took a bit of cleaning up. A bit of luck to catch this camo Phantom while operating from Boscombe Down in 1990, this was the RAF first production aircraft and spent its life as a trials aircraft, flying from Holloman, New Mexico initially and Scampton in later years, before ending up at West Freugh's dump where it perished.

At Farnborough 1990 the hugely impressive An225 making tight turns over the back of the airfield during its Saturday display, the display even incorporated a touch n go.
