Tommy at Kemble - Negus Retirement

Post by Tommy »

Couple of polished turds today. Coincidentally I had the day booked off anyway. Looking at the weather, it was absolute pish, but because I had the day off, I thought it worth a punt anyway.

One of the most nervous-spotting days I've had. About an hour of "will it land, will it divert", as the biblically awful weather broke just in time for the BA crew to bring Negus to her final resting place. looking at the forecase, I had no idea how fortunate we'd be with the weather. Not only did the rain and cloud clear away for it to land, but the sun came out briefly, too! Madness, this hobby.

(Think I need to re-touch the white balance on this one. Seems a touch off)

Apols for the lack of variety.

C&C welcomed, of course.

Very nice mate, you stepped in some good stuff today for that weather window.

Fantastic shots Tommy.

Watched it unfold on FR24. Did several holding patterns and I assumed it was because of the weather and thought she would divert. Looking at your pics seems unbelievable you got that window.

Fair play for going to get them.

Sad day.

Mark.

Fab shots Tom, and what a stroke of luck with the weather!

That's not how this hobby usually works - you normally spend all day under the sun until the minute anything moves, then cloud rolls in from nowhere!

I took a punt at Heathrow yesterday, i didn't pay off but at least can say i was there to witness the last BA747 leave.

Fantastic shots and glad it paid off for you.

Strange to see this aircraft go, as this was the last 747 I worked on before furlough. Great shots though, particularly the wide angle ones.

Excellent set Tom. A day that you'll remember and one for the annals of civil aviation history.

Lovely photos Tom, can't fault them! You must have made some good sacrifices to the weather gods! Can't help but feel a little bit sad scrolling through these though, very much the end of an era in commercial aviation!

Cheers for the kind comments, chaps.

The weather is still crazy even when I think about it now. Cold, wet, miserable and low cloud, and we all thought it would likely divert. It was holding for so long, but just as small patches of blue sky appeared, so did she!

I’ll remember the day for a long time, I think.
