48 Hour photo comp: Kellys Heroes

Post by Tuckat »

Kelly Johnson. The bloke was a flipping genius. Initially the theme was going to be a Kelly Johnson inspired aircraft, but looking in detail at his back catalogue the scope would be too great, so Ive limited it to just four.

P-38
U2
F104
SR71

Any setting, any venue, anywhere, three maximum entries per person.

Righto, I'll kick off. As much as I love a '104, its going to be difficult not to go for three Blackbirds. A beast of an aircraft and one of the airshow greats.

Possibly one of the most gorgeous warbird in the Airshow circuit. The P38 Lightining.

It won't come as a surprise which type I chose from the list 😄

The first two taken at the 1985 Mildenhall Open Air Fete which goes some way to explaining the image quality!

This airframe, 64-17979 (or apparently more accurately 61-7979) is now on display at the History & Traditions Museum, Lackland AFB Texas.

This one was at the 1987 Mildenhall Air Fete

This airframe, 64-17964 (61-7964) is now displayed at the Strategic Air Command Museum, Ashland Nebraska.

Leaving it to the Blackbirds to win, three different coloured Italian F-104s all leaving the same show - can you remember the year?

I could have posted numerous Dragon Lady images, but opted to just go for one to give a bit of variety to the thread! This shot from an epic day with the 99th ERS earlier this year.

Secondly, one of the most famous P-38 Lightning restorations: Glacier Girl. Seen at Airventure 2012 at Oshkosh.

And finally, an arty image from Castle Air Museum, of their SR-71A on display.

Not so many pics to share on this theme.
Found 3 however.

USS Intrepid, 1998:
ImageUSS Intrepid 012 by Colonel CHIBANI, sur Flickr

Ferté 2012:

Ferté 2013:

By comparing these 2 shots, one can witness the equipment upgrade, but the constant style of the photographer (and the random weather at La Ferté) !

As Blackbird shots have been bettered already will keep them in the drawer for now. No P-38s at all and U2/TR.1 shots are below average.

So, F-104s it is, which is no bad thing, and allows another dig into the archives.

(With other bonus Lockheeds at Mildenhall in 1983, must have been an anniversary?)

Give me another hour, really difficult choice with so many superb entries. Going to have to rope in Senior Management and the cat to help out 🙂
