48 Hour Photo Comp: Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls - the Red Arrows!

Post by DerekF »

As simple as it sounds, your three best shots of the Red Arrows, past or present.

Over-saturated, over Southport

At RIAT 2018.

Nice theme Derek. The Red Arrows planted the seed of the airshow bug for me, so are the reason I'm here. Its a tricky challenge to narrow this down to three images for my own submission. I look forward to watching this thread.

Surprised this hasn't been done already!

Get this one up (again) first:

From the same Duxford show (some of the best light I've ever seen on the Arrows):

And one from RIAT. I was bitching to my brother about the Red Arrows doing flat commemorative flypasts, and what a shame they don't fly the bend, what a waste with a 747.... and then this.

Thank you Red Arrows. For every display.

RIAT 2014, for an hommage to the Reds first mount:

RIAT 2015, for an iconic flypast (and a little creativity in the framing for me):

RIAT 2016, for a detail I just noticed : a back-seater is taking a pic of me !
Would be curious to see it ...

In the air, they are peerless:

On the ground, they are perfect:

But, perhaps more than anything, they are very much people. This is 2 children who I was teaching at the time meeting them at RIAT 2013. They gave both the kids so much of their time - way more than the slightly frazzled PR lady wanted them to have - and left a sense of excitement like I have rarely seen.

We may deride them sometimes, but we really, really would miss them if they weren't here. And by God don't they fly well too!

An excellent idea for a comp, and as you'd expect, some cracking entries so far- good luck judging this one!

Starting off in 2012, when RAFAT were flying as a seven ship and their routine included this 'Memorial Bend' in honour of Flt Lt Jon Egging & Flt Lt Sean Cunningham. This image from the RNAS Yeovilton Air Day, with the sun shining down and casting shadows off the formation, has always been a favourite of mine with formation, shadows and content being rather apt.
Image

Secondly, a shot from Armed Forces Day in 2018, with the Red Arrows performing in Llandudno Bay. It was one of my favourite displays as I simply watched the majority of the performance and enjoyed it for the skill and precession, with the added atmosphere of a general public audience around me who were loving every minute of it and making their admiration very clear with clapping and cheering.
Image

Finally, it has to be said that "Tornado" is one of the most photogenic manoeuvres added to the RAFAT sequence in recent years. It's always impressively flown, even if they did copy it from Al Fursan. This shot from the RAF Cosford Air Show 2018 encapsulates the great british airshow for me.

Peter,

The Llandudno shot is a cracker; you have it dated as 2012, but with RAF100 logos on the aircraft; is this a typo?

Cheers
