48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
This is only the second time one mod has awarded another. Is there a general consensus in the group for mods to be excluded from these photo comps? I don't mind if that is the case.
Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
Not from me. The more participants the better in my view.

Agreed - I don't see any pass the parcel going on. 'Favourite' is always going to be subjective isn't it.
Dan's shot is great but it's not the one I would have picked, for example.
I think the whole concept of the 48hr contest is great - long may it continue!
not that I ever bloody win mind...
Perhaps just to mix it up a bit the OP of each contest could pick their top three then put it to a 24 hour vote to pick the winner? Just a thought, and probably more faff than it's worth, but could be fun...

Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
It is true. Its difficult ignoring some of the Mods' pics, Nick's for example are a staggeringly high standard every time, but its all subjective, and as long as the pic fits the comp you can't exclude folks.
By the way, I wouldn't have picked Dan's either this time, I thought Sarah's Lanc looked timeless and perfectly done. Then again I don't do B&W rubbish.
Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
Cjs I like that idea. Apologies, I just wanted to put a point of view.

Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
The vote thing could work, but it would drag the process out further and does everyone know how to create a poll - or would that be a mod responsibility? It's certainly a possibility though.CJS wrote: ↑Mon 16 Nov 2020, 4:33 pmAgreed - I don't see any pass the parcel going on. 'Favourite' is always going to be subjective isn't it.

If I'm honest I'm not a fan of the keeping score, I think it adds a level of competiveness that isn't really needed. I think we need a list of what's been before - but keeping score?
Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
Out of curiosity CJS, which photo would you have chosen?

Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
I wouldn't go for the vote format, the judge's decision is final and that's what makes it what it is. As long as they pick mine now and again I'm happy! Don't want to exclude Mods. The more the merrier indeed.
Having said that, how about for the end of the year we have a Best of the Best comp where we can vote for the top image of all the comp winners? Is that feasible?

Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
Now, I think that is certainly a good idea, hell, you could even do a monthly comp as you should have a good 10-15 pics in that time.Spiny Norman wrote: ↑Mon 16 Nov 2020, 4:47 pmI wouldn't go for the vote format, the judge's decision is final and that's what makes it what it is. A monthly or annual competition sounds like a good idea.
This and the "On this Day" thread have been brilliant over the last 8 months or so.

I agree Andy, the this day in history is one of the best threads on here in a very long time. I do hope that continues. You always find pics you overlooked the first time so there will always be something different to look at.

Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
My 2p: Keep the format as it is, no need to exclude moderators, and keep it that the thread starter chooses to winner. It’s their subject, so should be there I to choose the winner.
Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
+1!
As of monthly voting - sounds like a great idea! And then TOP 12 go to Pic of the Year vote - how about that?
Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
OK, let me look into the monthly poll thing. We'll have to play catch-up this year and it won't be a full year as it started in April.
I'll try and get something up for April in a bit.

Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
Poll for April 2020 is up and stickied for the next 48 hours - get voting!
Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
I've also added the voting link to full topics list.

What, apart from my own
Peter's USAF heritage flight this time.
As I imagine most of us do, I pick my own winner from each contest, just for my own amusement, and I generally go for the one that instantly slows me down when I'm looking through.
Normally that's 3 or 4 in each set, and then I have a closer look.
This time it was Peter's heritage pair, Sarah's Lancaster and 'Spitfire Attack!' by AndyPH.

I guess that goes to show just how subjective photography really is!CJS wrote: ↑Mon 16 Nov 2020, 7:19 pmWhat, apart from my own

Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
As for me, I appreciate this contest, as it shows how broad is our hobby.
And the OP final selection and explanation of his choice enable a sharing of approach to aircraft photography and aestetics.
This made me have a new look at my pics, dig into my archives, rediscover some forgotten shots and also want to explore new possibilities.
So let's continue like that !

Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
I guess I wanted to just spark a debate to see what others thought of it. To be honest what the good colonel has said I too have looked more at my pictures over the past 7 months more and found many pics I had over looked. While not in the same league as most, I like the ones ive posted, but not as much as seeing everyone elses pics. while not agreeing with some of the decisions I still enjoy them.
So just ignore what I said and keep on going.

Re: 48 Hour Photo Comp: Monochrome
I do wonder if this is running out of puff in it's current form?
seems like less entries and the subjects (by necessity ) get vaguer - 48 Hour Comp - Mildenhall operating RWY 29 on a Tuesday afternoon.
I wonder how you can get more people to post - perhaps reduce the 48hrs to weekly - perhaps not have subjects? or just a weekly flying and a weekly static competition - not allowed to use the same photo twice?
I do agree the winner judges the next comp - people see things so differently - it's great one person's winner doesn't make another's top 10.
No worries having mods enter - of course they should.
Perhaps a subject that should get throw up in the waffle section to see what people want - maybe a vote on which type of comps people would like?

I don't think we'll run out of topics anytime soon. I guess every person entering the competition is somehow hoping for the win and has future topic already in mind
Some topics have less entries indeed, but still - over 20 replies is not bad at all. Quite a range to pick from.
