20th anniversary run. for Lindy

Post by ianf »

As you may have seen in the on this day thread. Today is Victor XL231 27th anniversary of her arrival at her home of Elvington. For those that do not know. she was bought by father and son Gerry and Andre Tempest. It lives at the Yorkshire Air Museum near York. She has been maintained all this time by Andre an a dedicated team of Volunteers. Seven years ago we held a big event to celebrate the 20th Anniversary.

The press had been invited and we had several Tv crews on site, so it was busy even without looking after Lindy! But the run actually started 2 days before with us prepping her for the run. First thing was to give her a wash!

The tail lights are quite exposed so they were checked for damage.

This is what a recently painted and washed wing looks like.

The Second day the fence was removed and the Tow bar attached to the tug ready to move.

Ollie our pilot wondered if he could drive from the back!

The traditional way of packing the parachute!

We had at that time been having issues with our Artouste flaming out after a few minutes. We decided to do a late test, and sure enough it did. We found cleaning a filter in the bomb bay fuel pump meant it was good to go for several runs. So we cleaned it and had no further issues that weekend. The pump had to be replaced the following year as the issue worsened. Today said Pump is sitting on a shelf in front of this PC!

As it was the first time since our recent repaint that she was on the airfield, I set up the lights for a night shoot for the team and a few friends who helped us that day.

Tail lights work! and a rare chance to see her HDU down.

The rear cockpit is complete and functional as you can see.

Day 3 for us was run day. We had plenty of media taking pics of everything we did!

Some of the media did not quite know what they were covering, these two asking why the "parachute" was hanging out the back of the bomb!

Squadron leader Al Stevenson our AEO rightly getting TV attention.

For the run itself we had a guest second AEO namely Mick Beer, Who was Bob Tuxford AEO on Black buck 1

Talking of Black Buck 1 Vulcan captain that day was Martin Withers who was in the jump seat on this occasion, but he still didn't wear a bone dome!

Andre her owner in the co pilot's seat.

To re enact the arrival She taxied down to the bottom end which is the end she landed at. 2.00 PM brakes off for the run. the time she did her final landing.

A bit of a role reversal Martin taking the pics!

Martin was off to a lecture that night, so all of the team signed a book for him to auction. He in turn autographed some of our pictures.

The team and Guests. Ty Andy for this shot.

Andre's father sadly died earlier that year so did not see the run, but his flight suit was on board for the run.

I really enjoyed scrolling through this thread with the wonderfully evocative images. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. (Note to self: must visit the Yorkshire Air Museum in 2021!)

Now that we'll no longer see the Brunty one run, will she be doing high speed runs next year?

Truthful answer is I do not know. We want to, and I think it is possible. But there is a lot that should have been done this year, work wise that hasn't been done. So next year will probably be very busy. If we do I will tell everyone on here for sure.
