I have it as you will be removed from arrivals day if you start clamouring for attention saying "T' be sure and diddly diddly" when the Irish PC-12 appears on approach? Maybe I need to use spellcheck?

What, since a not-bland update? Seriously?
Oh wait, you mean the last few weeks have been good. Phew! I get you now

The " Ascent Showcase" probably means the aircraft will be lined up in the way new trainees entering will progress.
Grob Tutor/Prefect etc >> T6 Texan II >> Phenom T1 >> Hawk T2
"Ascending" through the cadets progress in trainers and other aircraft as they move through their careers.

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Actually pretty excited about the PC21 pair.
I'm into noisy fast jets, but this year has such variety its going to be a cracker.

Or Ascent is the name of the contracted company to deliver the MFTS and this will be an area showcasing the company plus the aircraft they use....jasonT1981 wrote: ↑Thu 12 May 2022, 2:30 pmThe " Ascent Showcase" probably means the aircraft will be lined up in the way new trainees entering will progress.

Perhaps 'firsts' are not the only measure of how good an airshow is?capercaillie wrote: ↑Thu 12 May 2022, 11:37 amBrazilian KC-390, Romanian An30, Lithuanian Dauphin, Omani CASA 295MPA, Hungarian Mi24s, German A340, even French PC-21s - all UK airshow firsts - bland?
Hard to please some people.
The update did nothing for me - but one update does not make an airshow - all to play for in the next 2 months
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
'Ascent Showcase' = Funeral maybe?
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Each to their own, but I do find it quite weird how people think that anything other than a fast jet is “bland”. It must be quite a boring hobby?
But even if that’s the case, a look at the participation list shows a feast of fast jet demos -
Austrian and RAF Typhoons, Belgian and Greek F-16s, the Finnish Hawk, Hungarian and Swedish Gripens, Spanish and Swiss F-18s, Swedish Sk60…
That’s just the solos - add the Reds, Frecce, Black Eagles (the latter both unconfirmed), and that’s a stellar lineup of fast jets. It’s not unreasonable to hope for an Italian solo, too, say the Typhoon or M346. I’ll daresay you can probably also expect a few flypasts and some hovering by an RAF/RN F-35.
That’s an insane lineup for any fast jet bro.

Whoa slow up the assumption and outrage bus! Where did I mention Fast Jets - most Airshow I enjoy dont have any!
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
But if you are going to play that Game one of the last RIATs I went to had in the flying display:
F-4, F-104, Mig-21, MiG-23, Mig 29, Flanker, F-16 , Hornet, F-100, F-15, A-10, F-117, Tonado F-3, GR4, Jaguar, Harrier, Viggen, F-5, Mirage F1
You can also throw in B-1, B-52, B-2 and Concorde
And thats just off the top of my head - Sure there were more!
Same old Afterburners Yawn (and thanks yes I know they world has changed and it cant be repeated!)
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
None of this is really adding anything to the discussion, why not just say what it is that would make a good update for you?Andyph wrote: ↑Fri 13 May 2022, 8:27 amBut if you are going to play that Game one of the last RIATs I went to had in the flying display:

I was just pointing out that 'firsts' dont in themselves make a good airshow - simple. But people though I was moaning about the lack of fast jets - but if you read the posts I wasn't!
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
No, you weren’t, and you’re right - “firsts” don’t necessarily always make an airshow. A slew of “firsts” that are boring drones, or celebrity appearances, might not excite many.
The “firsts” Caper listed however, are pretty decent in my book.

What a show 97 was, I didn't fully appreciate just how good we had it back then. I certainly don't envy the job DBH have today.Andyph wrote: ↑Fri 13 May 2022, 8:27 amBut if you are going to play that Game one of the last RIATs I went to had in the flying display:

Each to their own exactly, I really do not see an issue with people who are only interested in particular types. I do not see how that makes a hobby bland.Tommy wrote: ↑Fri 13 May 2022, 8:00 amEach to their own, but I do find it quite weird how people think that anything other than a fast jet is “bland”. This exact fretting will be happening this exact time next year, even though everyone enjoyed the previous show!

Its almost less about the aircraft and more about how it is presented for me
For example I love gliders – flying them and watching – can sit somewhere like Long Mynd all day watching the ridge soaring.
But a glider on static at Fairford – surrounded by bollards and people I’d walk past without almost registering – it might as well not be there.
it would also be a waste on the flying display– Ultra Yawn!
I’ve seen lots of awesome Hawk flying – like the Mach Loop and on various FAC Exercises – but watching a Hawk display over Oxfordshire while I'm at Fairford (maybe not but the fast jet display line feel a long way away and makes a Hawk seem very small!) isn’t so exciting !
That's why to me the Finnish Hawk or the French PC-21s for example will struggle to make an impact at Fairford
Considering the flying display I think Fairford lends itself to fast jets/ large aircraft/ formations and flypasts – most other things are lost somewhat .
So to me highlights (at Fairford) tend to be fast jets/ large aircraft/ formations and flypasts! It not my only interest in aviation - but I think it is these that make a good Fairford for me
and putting on my hard hat the only interest I really have from statics is them arriving and departing!

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
That is very true, although, the point, surely, with the likes of the Finnish Hawk or French PC21s is that you’re very unlikely (absent the odd rare deployment) to ever see them in another context in the U.K.

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
And appreciating everyone has different things to look forward to, with many not attending arrivals, but that is the essence of a great IAT event for me. I've been lucky enough to attend every one since 1985, and arrivals day, every one since 1987 with the exception of two days, including both Cottesmore shows and the two Boscombe events, so seeing all of the rarer stuff in the air, cursing the crap weather days, enjoying the blue skies, its all part of IAT. Static parks crammed with goodies that may not have a display crew, but will be in the air pre and post show - fabulous. Otherwise there was no point in that Bear coming in 1993, or the Skywarrior in 1991, all those Phantoms in 1983 - pah!
The original pick up for this thread drift was not your post Andy saying nothing this week floated your boat, that's fair enough, its the comment that the last four weeks were bland. With a war on occupying probably a lot of training scenarios for front line units, what has been announced - more first timers at this stage than I can remember for a good few years (COVID not counted), I currently view it far from bland. If Hungarian Hinds come into the bland category (admittedly they ruined them with grey paint), I struggle to know what people really want anymore? Thunderbird 1 and 2 perhaps?
