Finland - F-35 proposed

Post by FinAce »

According to preliminary information obtained by Finnish newspaper sources, the Finnish Defence Forces are proposing the Lockheed Martin F-35A as Finland's next fighter jet. The information is not yet official.

According to the source, the Defence Forces justify their proposal on the basis of the F-35's performance and long service life, among other things.

The next step is for the Ministry of Defence to prepare a proposal for the acquisition of the fighter. The government will make a final decision on the purchase before Christmas.

Wasn't one of Finland's main requirements that the aircraft have two engines?

No,

Top criterias;

The selection of fighters will be a significant decision in terms of security policy, defence policy and national economy. Many factors affect this decision. The following have been specified as areas of key importance for making the decision:

Capabilities. The system's capability to win fights during its service life.
Costs. Can we afford to purchase, use and develop the system throughout is life cycle?
Security of supply and the domestic industry’s role. The usability of the system in times of peace and war.
Security and defence policy impacts. Potential impacts of the selection on Finland’s security and defence cooperation.

The procurement contains 64 F-35A Block 4 multi-role fighters, substantial and versatile weaponry tailored for the operating circumstances, required training and sustainment solutions, other related systems as well as sustainment and maintenance services until the end of 2030.

The current Hornet fleet will be phased out as planned from the year 2025. The first Finnish F-35 fighters will begin service with the Finnish Air Force in 2025 as part of the training of Finnish personnel in the United States. The first F-35s will be delivered to Finland in 2026. In Finland the F-35 system will replace the Hornet fleet in the fighter wings between 2028 and 2030.
