RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
Some have escaped the 'chop' from the previous list but I simply cant understand why the B-25 is being let go

The B-25J at Hendon?

Plenty of relevance in my view... but I may be slightly biased.

From: http://www.joebaugher.com/usaf_bombers/b25_22.htmlThe Mitchell II and III soldiered on into the post-war period, there still being 393 Mitchells on RAF rolls as late as December 1945.
A total of 910 B-25s went to Britain under Lend-Lease, but some were returned at the end of the war.

That particular aircraft/airframe never flew with the RAF therefore no Relevance.

That could be said about a lot of airframes in the collection! However an important type in 2TAF medium role

Sadly I think that is the mentality the RAF Museum has taken. "This is representative of an aircraft flown by the RAF but no RAF crew ever sat in that specific pilot's seat, so off to the scrap man it goes!"Pen Pusher wrote: ↑Mon 13 Dec 2021, 10:45 amThat particular aircraft/airframe never flew with the RAF therefore no Relevance.

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
Is it even theirs? It was one of the five at Blackbushe after Hanover Street filming and subsequently used in Eye of the Needle. Was RAFM gifted it, loaned it or did they buy it?cg_341 wrote: ↑Mon 13 Dec 2021, 11:24 amSadly I think that is the mentality the RAF Museum has taken. Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
It was an exchange deal with Doug Arnold for a Spitfire IIRC
Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
They'd better get rid of the B-17, P-51, P-40, P-47 and a bunch of others too, using that logic. Not to mention the ridiculous pale grey USAF Hercules nose in whatever they call Milestones nowadays.Pen Pusher wrote: ↑Mon 13 Dec 2021, 10:45 amThat particular aircraft/airframe never flew with the RAF therefore no Relevance.

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
The Hart was a Hawker company demonstrator, Stranraer ex-RCAF and Hudson ex-RAAF so presumably they will be off soon...

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
The B-25J could easily by painted up as a TAF Mitchell III. The DH Dominie has been in store for years without any work. The rules are getting silly, half of the aircraft in the GW building have no RFC/RAF history being either replicas or some pre RFC even. Might as well get rid of the EH101, Beaufort, Hudson, Stranraer, B-17 etc. They probably want to make room for more things that appeal to the yoofs.
Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
The EH-101 prototype is already in the process of being removed from Hendon, it has most likely gone by now. I guess it will shortly be up for disposal too.

Well, six of that list are in hangar 1 at Cosford, so wonder what the plan there is?8674planes wrote: ↑Mon 13 Dec 2021, 6:13 pmThere is also a Transfers/loan list that was published today by RAFM also.

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
I'm not sure why they are trying to dispose of aircraft anyway. It's not as if they have any coming in to replace them. They haven't got any of the recently retired types - Tucano, King Air, Squirrel, Griffin, Tristar, Jaguar GR.3, Tornado GR.4, Sentry, Sentinel off the top of my head.
Probably making way for more interactive stuff rather than saving important aircraft types.

"Reason for disposal: Completeness/Condition" - forgive my ignorance, does the RAF Museum not restore exhibits for display?

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
It was partially dismantled when we were there on 11th November.
Also noted that a lot of the non-aircraft displays (eg the two storey building in front of the B-17G and the Bomber Command related artefacts on the wall by the Lancaster and B-24) had either gone or were in the process of being dismantled.
Looked like some fairly major changes were coming to the former Bomber Command hall but couldn’t find any information as to what was going to happen.
Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
This is getting silly.. just to name one the Gloster Meteor t7 "Prone Pilot" in the TEST flight hanger.. how could that be considered duplication when its the only one built!
Then you look further down the list to see the Bristol 188.. tornado prototype..
Has someone left the airfix glue open in the offices, because they need there bloody heads checking!

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
As I believe the management of the RAF Museum have said in the past it is not an aircraft museum it is the museum of the RAF (which happens to contain aircraft)
Given current views in society they probably would like to do away with all the noisy smelly carbon producing horrors and concentrate on how ethnically diverse and inclusive they are

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
Perhaps the 1970s RAFG were right after all: the business of the RAF is flying and fighting, the business of those who don't is to support those who do.
The RAFM management need a reminder.

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
RAFM lost its way years ago. Director with no links to the forces, or aviation. Talk of making it more 'human' but then they get rid of the galleries in the original building. Here was the human side, just not presented in a modern way. This is akin to Stonehenge being neglected and left to get overgrown and all the money being spent on the visitors center insted.

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
Not just the Director. None of the so-called Management team have any links to aviation. They all seem to be 'Museum professionals' whose experience comes from the wider 'cultural' sector including Charities and the Theatre, 3 our of 4 who are women. Its difficult to imagine a bunch more out of tune with the commemoration of Military airpower.
Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
3 out of 4 are women. Well there you go. What were they thinking. Thankfully attitudes have moved on from the 1940s.

Re: RAF Museum Airframe Disposal List
If you really don't think that when an organisation becomes progressively dominated by women rather than men its characteristics and priorities don't change radically then I think you are being less than honest. There is even a name for this process, its called feminisation and one that is widely advertised by feminists themselves as a good thing. Google the feminisation of education and you will get thousands of responses. That is why I am saying the drastic change in the sex ratio is relevant among the museum leadership. The disposal and lack of interest in the military hardware of the museum is very much part of this process.
