Shuttleworth "Spitfire Photography Day", 11 June 2021

Post by Hatstand »

A grand day out at Old Warden earlier this month, for their "Spitfire photography day"!

Hosted by Darren Harbar, it kicked off with a presentation of the amazing history of Shuttleworth's resident Spitfire, AR501...
Then we all went out to the paddock to take photos of AR501 up close, with vintage vehicles, re-enactors etc...
And hear Stu Goldspink talk about flying Spitfires...

Darren was on-hand at all times to give advice, suggest camera settings etc, no matter what type of camera
(pretty much everything was being used - smartphones, compacts, mirrorless system cameras, DSLR's etc).

The wartime re-enactors were dressed for historical accuracy, matching AR501's squadron markings etc.
They even went as far as having the "pilot" be the "appropriate" age O_o

All that was awesome of course, but ultimately it was just the gravy. Because the REAL attraction of the day (for me at least!)
...was being allowed into the cockpit of a Spitfire!!!
I couldn't sign up fast enough, when I saw that was part of the deal!

Anyway. Here's some of my photos from the day:

1. I have always wanted to take a "WW2 Spitfire scramble" photo, but never had the chance. Until now!

I would have posted sooner, but at some point and unbeknownst to me, UKAR apparently stopped allowing http URL's for images (https only!). My photos are hosted on my own website, which had no SSL certificate for https, because that costs a significant amount every year. But! Now there is "Let's Encrypt" providing free SSL certificates! So now my site allows https connections, and I can post images here again!

Photos taken with Panasonic GX80 and G90 micro-four-thirds cameras. Lenses were:
Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 Pro (80-300mm FF equivalent)
Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7 (85mm FF equ)
Laowa 7.5mm f2 (15mm FF equ. to get the whole cockpit in the frame! Rectilinear not fish-eye!)
Goodbye 600D... Hello FZ150!
