RAF Museum, Hendon 2022 - *01DEC22*

Post by Pen Pusher »

First visit to RAFM Hendon since the 22nd February 2020. No changes in Hangars 1 to 3 but biggish ongoing changes in Hangers 4 & 5. In H4 the AW101 Heliliner has gone, hooray, but to get it to the roller doors in H5 behind the Lancaster and outside, they have had to move the BoB fighters in front of the Lancaster to the sides and there is a big empty space in H4 in front of said Lancaster. The most changes have been in H5. The circular air-to-air refuelling display by the Victor nose has gone, the church in a container and Princess Mary’s RAF nursing display have gone. The bomb damaged diorama that was in the corner by the He.162 has gone and the ‘Control Tower’ opposite the B-17 has gone which would make it easier now to move out the B.25 and Fw.190 as they are up for disposal. I believe there are other airframes coming from Cosford to fill the voids. Just a few record shots and angles I couldn’t get before taken with my little 20MP shirt pocket friendly Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100 M3 camera.

Lovely photos Brian, thanks for sharing! I like how they have the 190 two-seater posed and opened-up.

The 190 is Uber ugly.

I'd be more than happy to lose it from the collection - especially when Cosford has a single seater.

I went up the Thameslink to St Albans last week and there was a large section of blue helicopter at the back of the RAFM halls which I think must be the EH/AW101 - blue is as I recall it at Farnborough all those years ago! Weston-super-Mare a good home for it?

Great pics!

Blimey the last time I went to Hendon you walked around on blue carpet tiles rather than a painted concrete floor.

13th January 2022

Just a couple more record shots of the Fw.190 and a start has been made on dismantling the B-25.

Nice pictures and nice to see the blue carpet gone, frankly. Also good to see the EH.101 prototype gone - I always felt it was a little out of place.

It'll be interesting to see what gets squeezed into the Bomber Command Hall next; most likely the Hampden and Wellington once those are done. That two-image panoramic gives a good indication of how big that space is; there's a Vulcan tucked in behind the B-17.

The Hampden will be displayed as a fuselage only, and the Wellington’s staying at Cosford when it’s done.

Ah, interesting. The Hampden will be moved to Hendon, though? So, if the Wellington stays at Cosford, do you know where it will be placed? If it's in the War in the Air hangar, will there be aircraft moved back to Hendon?

Nothing, Mike? Don't wanna share anymore for the benefit of those of us out of the loop on the other side of the world?

And some more record shots of the Fw.190 and B-25. The Spitfire and Hurricane are in a temporary display together in the space in front of the Lancaster and the Fiat has been moved from between the Phantom and Tornado and parked next to the Bf.109. In the order taken.

RAF Museum, Hendon - 5th January 2022

Just a few random images from my first visit this year taken with my little shirt pocket friendly Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100 M3.

01 Situated along Aerodrome Road and just inside the fence of Hendon Police College is the last remaining factory unit, in its original position, of the Grahame-White Aviation Company at Hendon Aerodrome. The Dutch gable-style brick office structure dates back to 1918.

Bearing in mind the current clear out of types from the museum, I'm at a complete loss as to why the He162 is remaining. Surely an extremely minor type that has no bearing on the RAF (or the Luftwaffe for that matter).

Is there any public information of what is moving in/out of Hendon? I think it would be good to move the Bf109, CR42, Hurricane and Spit MKII into the bomber hall to be alongside the Ju87,JU88 and He111 to have a BofB corner. Move the B-24 to be next to the B-17 and there should be room?

RAF Museum, Hendon - 12th February 2022

And even more record shots of the dismantling of the B-25. The only other change noted since my last visit is that the Gazelle and Hoverfly are parked next to each other.

Thanks for the updates, interesting to see inside the B-25 before it heads off to wherever.
Glad I made the decision to visit last November when I had the chance, as I would have been miffed to have missed seeing the B-25 and Fw-190 one last time.

RAF Museum, Hendon - 23rd February 2022

A few more record shots of the changes in H5. The B-25 and 190 are still awaiting collection. After just over 6 years, Westland Lysander Mk.III(SD)/JR-M/ R9215/No.161 Squadron in a Special Ops colour scheme has arrived back from Cosford and Fairey Battle MK.1/L5343 has had its wings detached as that makes it easier to move to a new location in H5.

Great pics thanks for sharing - I hope they touch up the primered repair patch on the Battle's wing fillet replaced after MAPS restored it and the truck company damaged it- it only needs a squirt with a spray can but it always bugs me!

Hopefully they've repainted the Typhoon cannon cover the right way up too!

Good to see the Lysander back and looking good. I just wish the place wasn't so dam secretive about what their plans are. Shame the Wellington is staying at Cosford as there would be an almost complete Bomber Command WW2 collection minus Stirling and Whitley of course.
