Ursel Avia, 9 & 10 July 2022

Post by Chrisse »

For reasons that don’t need explaining, the first edition of the renewed ‘Ursel Avia’ was pushed back to this year. The airfield of Ursel is located near Aalter, between Ghent and Bruges in Belgium, in a region known as ‘Meetjesland’. This former NATO reserve airfield is located across the road from the World War 2 B67 airfield and has a long history of successful airshows.

On Sunday 10 July, Aeroclub Ursel seeks to link up with that illustrious past with an impressive flying display.
On Saturday 9 July, there will be an open cockpit-day where interested visitors sit in several cockpits of participating aircraft, or go on a pleasure flight over this leafy part of Belgium, for instance on an An-2. Of course, there are also alternative ways to spend (part of) that day, such as a visit to the nearby For Freedom Museum at Ramskapelle, dedicated to the liberation of the Scheldt estuary In 1944, which was supported from the air by RAF Typhoons operating from B67 Ursel.
On Friday, there will also be a spottersday limited to 200 people to see the arrival of the bulk of participating aircraft.

The main event will be on 10 July. There will be lots of ground animation, re-enactment, dance and music acts to go with the flying acts set around the following themes:
  • Pioneers, tasting the magic
  • Golden years of aviation
  • Reaching for liberation, WWII
  • Full metal wings, Vietnam
  • 24/24, 7/7, Belgian air force
  • Electric flying, future & drones
  • The art of flying
A number of exciting aircraft have already been announced and there will be several more surprises will be confirmed shortly. Among the confirmed acts are the hometeam of Formation Team The Victors, the Royal Jordanian Falcons, BAF NH-90NFH and A109, Team Raven, Dutch Hunter T.Mk68, Belgian Spitfire MkXVI, Catalina, Fieseler Storch, Swiss Classic Formation and a Lithuanian Bellanca Pacemaker, to name just a few, so as you can see an eclectic mix!
