looking forward to the Jubilee by looking back to flypasts of the past

Post by andygolfer »

I've been keeping an eye on the Queen's Birthday flypast on the 2nd June which is this year branded as the Jubilee flypast and thought I would look back at some of the previous flypasts that I've photographed, I've found 4 in the digital age, 2010, 2013, 2916 and the RAF100 flypast of July 2018. I've got some non digital ones somewhere including an RAF anniversary of something or other around 1990 (HELP!!!), if I can find them i'll scan any that are worthwhile. I just wish I could find my late father's pics from 1969 with Concorde 002 and a large formation of Lightnings (16 I think but surely it wasn't that good!) - it was certainly noisy  .
hopefully some of you can also contribute to the idea with other years especially if you have any of the 1969 event - they were always impressive in those days.
anyway here are some from each starting with 2010, these were taken (on the wrong side for the sun) between Hatfield Peverel and Terling in Essex, I lived just north of Terling until I first married so I used to cycle to Hatfield Peverel in my youth to watch the flypast as it more or less followed the railway line into London - how spoilt I was!
2010 (taken on my first DSLR with a 70-200 lens):

2013, these were taken by the railway line just west of Witham (Essex), a sunny day for once - let's hope for sunshine on the 2nd June

the Lancaster always flew further north and the helicopters join up over Fairlop so I never saw the latter on these occasions

so there we are, who can add other photos especially from other years (someone must have has sunny days!) so we can see how the flypast has changed with time - thanks for looking

I've found a video of the 1969 flypast on the Mall and indeed there were 16 Lightnings followed by Concorde G-BSST, this is a Trooping the colour video and the flypast is about the last 30 seconds of it, 16 lightnings!!! a superb sight:

Superb piece of history and pageantry. Really enjoyed all 3 minutes and 20 seconds. Thanks for digging it out and sharing.
