Catch them while you can...

Post by Professor_M »

A simple premise here - a thread to keep track of types that have retirements in the coming year or so, so that people who might want to go and catch them one last time can do so, without only noticing they're gone once the retirement is announced.

I'll keep a list running at the top of this thread. Where retirement months are known, they are included:

Here goes - types facing upcoming retirement:
  • Italian Air Force AMX (June 2023 - Clinging on for the Centenary show)
  • Swedish Sabreliner - To be retired Q4 2023
  • Austrian AF Alouette III (By end of 2023)
  • Columbian Air Force Kfirs (In 2023)
  • Polish & Su-22 (2024)
  • US Navy C-2A Greyhounds (During 2024)
  • German Navy Sea King (In 2024)
  • Swedish Air Force SK60 (Training on M346 from 2024)
  • RNLAF F-16 (Early 2024)
  • Croatian Air Force MiG-21 (2024)
  • USAF KC-10A (End of FY2024 - by April 2024)
  • Italian Air Force Falcon 50s (May be retired in 2024, G650ER to replace Falcon 50/900)
  • RAF Griffin HAR2 (gone), AAC Gazelles (gone), SAS Dauphin, FOST Dauphin, RAF Pumas - To be replaced by NMH
  • RNZAF C-130H (C-130J to start arriving in 2024, full fleet 2025)
  • RAF Typhoon Tranche 1 (by 2025)
  • Czech Air Force Hip (2025)
  • German Navy Sea Lynx (2025)
  • Italian Air Force Tornado (2025)
  • Italian Army A129 Mangusta (2025)
  • Swiss Air Force F-5 (2025)
  • USN EP-3E Aries (2025)
  • French Air Force KC-135RG (2025 - C-135FR retired end of 2023)
  • Danish Air Force F-16 (2025)
  • USAF U-2S (End of FY26)
  • Polish Air Force MiG-29 (2026)
  • Swiss F-5 (2027)
And looking further ahead:
  • RN Merlin HM2 (2030) and HC4 (2040 - but that's so distant that it will no doubt change numerous times before retirement!)
And be wary of disgruntled NH90 and Tigre operators!
  • (German Tigre (2032))

KC-10 is surely sticking around for a few more years yet?

RAF Hercs were pushed back a couple of months.

Norwegian P-3 is due to retire end of June.

The fleet is to be fully retired by the end of US FY 2024 - that begins on 1st April 2023 it's the type the KC-46 is officially replacing.

With KC-Y and KC-Z batches to replace the KC-135.

AAC Gazelles, SAS Dauphins (perhaps FOST, too?), Pumas in 24 months or so.

Romanian MiG-21s will likely be gone sometime around spring next year, Croatian ones not far behind.

Polish MiG-29s can’t have long left. I lose track of it all, but I last read something about them donating most of their engines to Bulgaria, and only keeping a handful of jets airworthy to maintain QRA.

Hell, even our Merlin fleet (or at least, the HM2s) are in single digits. I think their OSD is 2030. Not sure about the Commando ones, but probably 2035ish.

Laughably - it’s worth keeping an eye out for NH-90 fleets, too. A good many users are looking to plonk them into an early retirement (Belgians, Norwegians, Swedish, Australians etc).

HM2 OSD should still be 2040.

Indeed - this is the most up-to-date article I could find: https://www.flightglobal.com/helicopter ... 23.article

No rush to see these then - the best part of 18 years or so left!

  • Romanian Air Force MiG-21 (Early 2023 - Croatians to follow soon after???)
Croatian MiG-21s will be going by 2024.

A few more imminent retirements are..

- Italian AMX are hanging on until the Italian Air Force 100th anniversary show next June
- Norwegian Sea Kings were due to be retired before 2023
- US Greyhounds going in 2024
- 2025 sees Czech Hind, German Sea Lynx, Italian Tornado and Italian Mangusta all retire
- Swiss F-5s also due to retire in 2025, although I wonder if the Pat Suisse will continue with the type

Greek Buckeyes must be close to finishing?

I thought at Duxford they said the Czech Hinds would be gone by the end of this year?

Have the German A340s retired yet?

Indeed, Czech Hinds to be transferred to Ukraine - whole fleet retired by the end of 2022.

German A340 are meant to be gone by the end of the year too, replacement in the form of A350.

According to Scramble, the direction générale de l'Armament Essais en vol (DGA Flight Test Unit) has retired their fleet of four Dassualt Falcon 20s.

They've been replaced with a Fokker 100, with a second airframe due to join the DGA next year
