Italian Air Force 100th Anniversary Airshow 2023

Post by boff180 »

The show will be hosted at Practica di Mare air base just outside Rome from the 16th to 18th June 2023 (16th might be a private day).

Not much is known about participants however it is known that the Italian Air Force are making a Fiat G.91 airworthy for the event and it may be the last time to see an AMX in the air too.

Looking forward to this one. Hotel already booked.

Is there a website up yet for the show?

For the celebration yes https://www.aeronautica.difesa.it/home/ ... 1923-2023/ but not for the airshow yet. Also have accommodation and flights booked.

I’m thinking of attending this. Is there anyway of getting to the base by public transport?

Whilst not officially confirmed, it is my understanding that there will be no (or extremely limited) international participation in the flying display at this event. Their current intent is for only aircraft types flown by the Italian Air Force (past & present) to participate in the display programme.

That said, I believe the Italians are going all out to celebrate their centenary, with the first special schemes on serving aircraft already being revealed, and they are significantly better than the red RAF100 sticker we saw in 2018.

I’ve been told that 52 historic aircraft are planned to be flying at Pratica di Mare for the event

I was hoping there would be some public transport to get out there as I'd rather not hire a car. Would anyone be interested in traveling together from Rome?

Some of the staffers were saying in the group chat last night that a free show so close to Rome will be a bit of a ballache with traffic. Likewise public transport.

In any event, if you want to take the stress out of it, Threshold.aero (and perhaps others like 4Av) are doing a tour: https://www.threshold.aero/tours/2023/p ... -mare-2023

Is there a list of potential flying participants yet? I'm expecting plenty of special paint schemes and a real celebration of Italian airforce history. Hopefully the historic types will have temporary Italian markings. Perhaps...

Frecce MB-339
Typhoon
Tornado
F35A
F35B
AMX
M-346
C130 Herc
C27 Spartan

G-91
Starfighter
F16
P47 Thunderbolt
P51 Mustang
F86 Sabre
Vampire

I’d hope for representative examples of types such as Spitfire IX, T-6, C-47, Beech 18, Macchi 326, Fiat G46, Fiat G55, T-33, Siai-Marchetti SF260, Bell 47

Is that true ? I’ve looked back at previous shows at the base and it seems they’ve all had international participation. Suppose we’ll find out soon enough when display items start confirming their European schedules

This is not the same thing as previous airshows there, it is a very specific one-off event to mark the centenary and has been several years in the planning.

It sounds like they're organising a fab event that I would dearly love to attend. My wife's parents are Italian, so we'd have no trouble bunking in with some of her mob in Rome. Somehow, I don't think SWMBO would authorise the trip...

If you can get some accommodation south of Rome, the 705 bus may be your solution. There's also a regional train to a nearby station, Pomezia-S. Palomba, but that's about 15 road-kms from the base.
Cheers,

I saw it on someone’s story, rather than a permanent post so I can’t link it, but a pair of S.208s have already emerged in special schemes.

Probably a fair hope to place on most other types getting some form of special colours by the time the show comes around.

It wouldn't be a first for the Italian air force to do something out of the ordinary. In 2010, they celebrated the anniversary of the Frecce Tricolori at Rivolto with exclusively Italian air force displays and 'large' international display teams, actively refusing foreign solo displays. It wouldn't be all that surprising they limit themselves to exclusively focusing on Italian air force modern and historic. Good for them, I say, setting the event apart from other large international airshows and focusing on the anniversary proper.

Yes I agree. We just need to remember the RAF100 at RIAT, which was actually a generic airshow. Seems like the Italians have a clear vision of how they want to do this, and it sounds like it'll be a truly unique event.

AirBnB booked in zingarini on the coast…even has a roof terrace. I wonder whether I’ll get a good view of the flying display!

I love the idea of limiting the show to current and historic types. The SwissAF anniversary section of Air14 at Payerne is still one of the best thematic airshow set pieces I’ve experienced, so anything close to that would be magnificent.

Remember when we went to Payerne on that Wednesday?

Cosford was the better show for the RAF100. They went through almost the entire history of the RAF in their flying display. Cold War jets aside (except the Tornado)
