Belgian Air Force Days 2023 - Kleine-Brogel Airbase

Post by boff180 »

Returning to KB for 2023 is the Belgian Air Force airshow.

Always a cracker of an event, with usually a spottersday for arrivals. Make the most of arguably the most active F-16AM fleet in Europe while they last!

This year's dates are 9th and 10th September 2023.

The USAF F-35A Demo Team now has the show on it's schedule.

Having previously driven & camped, I'm looking at doing it differently this year and travelling via public transport. Am I correct in thinking there's usually a shuttle bus or something from Hasselt?

Hope so - I was struggling thinking how I might do this.

If there is I'd probably join you!

One would hope so, however beware that during a previous edition (can't remember 2014 or 2018), one was planned and announced from Hasselt but it never actually materialized, so people's trip ended there.

Seems to be something about Belgian Shows - fantastic in the air - less than organised on the ground.

Any cunning plan how to get to the show without a car?

Well, I'm no expert by any stretch but if no shuttle bus is organized from Hasselt or anywhere, I'd suggest trying to get to Peer from Leopoldsburg by bus (Hasselt-Leopoldsburg by train, on Saturday bus is also an option from Hasselt directly) and walking over to the base. Perhaps not the most attractive solution but certainly doable. It does have the advantage of avoiding the parking nightmare.
Personally, I will be walking from Peer center anyway.

When I attended the show in 2014 I managed to arrange a taxi from Leopoldsburg that took me to the base gates & picked me up again afterwards for I think 50 Euro total....was super convenient actually. I travelled from Leopoldsburg to 'Spotters Corner' via bus for a spotters day connected to the Sanicole show in 2016 I think....that wasn't terribly difficult. If you can get to Leopoldsburg by train I think it's doable...

Thanks Gents - good to know.

I was actually thinking of hiring an electric bike from Leopoldsburg for the 3 days..

Nice to know there might be some options

Thanks all!

My plan A is to book a couple of night's accommodation in Hasselt, and hope for a shuttle bus. Failing that, I'll get the train to Leopoldsburg as suggested, and then bus to Peer. I'm quite happy to walk as we will be travelling light anyway.

Cheers for help - looks like there are options.

No, not yet. Frecce domestic schedule is out, but not international dates. You're just a little too early, schedules will start appearing in the next few weeks.

Luckily enough I am always early with these things, of course the show is in September, pretty excited to see which teams will be appearing + countries

How likely to see the French with Paris Air Legend same weekend?
Almost certain PDF, Air Force and Navy Rafale's in Paris

What are the French like historically at displaying at two venues over the same weekend?

With Ayr (Saturday) and Southport and Goodwood same weekend I'm thinking Red Arrows and Typhoon are pretty unlikely but possible for late Sunday at KB?

French teams are known for hop overs, in 2019 at the Dutch air force days the patrouille the france also left mid weekend to another airshow to peform their display and afterwards return to Volkel, maybe they'll do something likewise this time as well, and isnt air legends an historical airshow or am I wrong? Seeing the Belgians and French are real close allies, we'll most likely see something of a display

Air Legends attracts a fair amount of military participation, last year it was the PdeF, A400M, Rafale solo and Aeronavale Rafales, and they’ve had the solo Alpha Jet in the past too.

So no Rafale for KB.
Wonder if the French will do a 2 ship fighter display this year - Please, pretty Please.
I so hope KB does not get the pair of PC-21s instead.
I'm still fingers crossed KB will get more fast jet displays than Fairford!

I'm standing up for the under dog - the little Belgian show against the might have the corporate monster that is IAT!

If I was an organiser I'd be having a bit of friendly competition and banter with my colleagues! - a side bet too!

I'm also going to KB while giving Fairford a miss

Last time I went to Belgium it was 2016 - there was if my memory is right there were 13 fast jets displays - they practiced one after another on the Friday - how awesome is that!
It was just before the Belgian decision on the F-16 replacement - personally I was hoping they would have gone Rafale

Thinking of doing the "Friends of the Air Force" package this year. Can anyone tell me what the grandstand is like for photography? (I ask, because I booked the grandstand one year at Duxford and there wasn't nearly enough room to swing a camera).

Cheers!

IIRC the grandstand is set back from the crowdline so it isn't all that great for photography. KB has the static between the crowd and runway so it's a benefit for take off shots but otherwise I don't think it benefits the experience.

What's better is a small platform to get above the heads of the crowds.
