George at Oshkosh 2023 *UPDATED 14 SEP.*

Post by GeorgeP »

G'day all, I have just returned from a five-week holiday to the USA which included nine days at Oshkosh. A mate and I decided to arrive at Osh on the Friday afternoon so that we could witness the mass arrivals on Saturday, and the general arrivals on Sunday. The sight of dozens of Bonanzas, Cessnas, Cherokees, Mooneys and other groups was a sight to behold.

Without doubt, this year's event was the best of the five that I have attended. A broad spectrum of antique and warbird aircraft, good weather (mostly!) and some pre-show planning resulted in some great photo opportunities. The highlights for me were: P-47D Thunderbolt (a razorback), P-51C Thunderbird, Super Guppy, MiG-23 (sadly lost a month later), a trio of MiG-17s, MiG-29, U2, C-1A Trader, the Connie (!), C-123 Provider, and some excellent USAF/USN/ANG demos. Here's the first installment of images to which I'll add more as I process them. Thanks for viewing and I hope that you enjoy them.

I followed the restoration of this aircraft for at least three years and was very happy to see it at this year's event.

More great shots from a unique show. What’s the contraption on the nose of the Cub please?

Great selection George and sparking my desire for a return next year.

Did you get the unique C123 Provider fly at any time?

Certainly not used as a clothesline. It was used to hang the thing over the side of a ship and launch it. There are plenty of images on the web, if you're interested.

Yes, I did. I'm surprised that it managed to get into the air because it was more a loose collection of rivets, aluminium sheets and steel than an aircraft. The engines leaked so much oil that the entire rear fuselage was spattered with it and, when the crew started its engines, half of Wisconsin's airfields went to Cat. IIIC. Dunno how it made the return trip from Beaver Falls PA. I'll put up a few images of it soon.

Sadly, this aircraft was destroyed about a month later whilst performing at the Thunder Over Michigan airshow. Both occupants safely ejected, no-one on the ground was injured.

A beautiful selection George. Trader, Provider, Buckeye and Piaggio really stand out for me, but there is so much nice stuff to look at.

Here are a few which I hope will put a smile on yer face:

I chased this bloke around Boeing Plaza for about 10 minutes in attempt to record an mage of his HUGE selfie stick. My persistence paid off.
