Radom 2023

Post by Roger_Over »

This was my first visit to Radom, motivated primarily by seeing some of the few remaining Soviet era aircraft flying in accessible countries.

I enjoyed world class displays from some of the best European military teams, as widely discussed photography from the airfield is challenging at best so for photos the best places are the areas south of the airfield which you can still get to on show days.

If I’d known how disorganised and unpleasant the access to the show is I would definitely have got the spotters ticket, without that prior knowledge though I decided to be flexible and joined a very hot and thirsty scrum of thousands trying to get in. Not nice, and for very little reward in terms of photographing statics or aircraft on the runway.

Great displays though made the trip worthwhile, I thoroughly enjoyed the classic Polish jets, modern PAF fleet especially in the flypast, and of course the Fitters and Fulcrums which were great to see again despite their very short appearances. Who knows when or if I’ll see them again.

If interested here are some shots I’ve cherry picked from what looks like a big job for winter to sort out. Taken with a Sony RX10iv bridge camera and tweaked a bit with Picassa 3.

Cheers Lambo,

It was a great show. And we were very lucky with the weather, unlike RIAT, the forecast rain and storms didn't materialise.

A very nice set. By the look of them, most were taken yesterday from outside?

Yes, some were from Thursday afternoon when I arrived but most were from yesterday, all from outside the wire around Gorka Spotterska.

I'll take your advice re a weekend spotters pass next time, I missed out on the four day one this time so didn't bother but won't make that mistake again!

Thanks for sharing these. A great variety of types unfamiliar to the UK show-goer and I must say that I'm very impressed with the clarity and sharpness of images from your bridge camera.

What everyone else said, great subjects, well taken. Thanks for sharing. There's still some great variety on the airshow circuit, if you're prepared to go and find it. Bravo!

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I think the Sony is on the limit really with this type of photography Alpha Delta, if you want something light and portable to put in a daysack with your lunch and head off somewhere then it does a good job but obviously doesn't compete with a good body and big lens setup in terms of quality. It's enough for me to print off a photobook at the end of the year though and relive a few happy aviation adventures!

Out of interest I’ve just been cross referencing some of the airframes from this show with other shows I have attended.

It was nice to see Fitter 8309 that had been on static at RIAT this year in the mass flypast at Radom, before joining the two seater 509 for the airfield attack. I’d also seen 509 on static at Zeltweg last year.

And the Fitter on static at Radom this year 3816 was their flying display aircraft on the Fri/Sat at Gdynia Aerobaltic in 2019, where it did a great display. I guess they don’t have many left so when you do see one there’s a fair chance of having seen it before, good to see regardless. Also their static Hip 606 was the same as at Gdynia 2019, and the Haze 1011 in the flypast was also static at Gdynia but now looks a bit drab compared with the old blue and grey navy camo it was wearing when I got a shot of it back then during departures:

Hopefully Poland will do a final farewell display for these types when the squadrons get disbanded, for me the airshow scene won't be the same without them.

Lovely stuff mate, certainly a good place to catch up with all the rarer Polish types and VIP fleet.

Can't help pining over that last shot though with a Ukrainian Fencer, oh what might have been if it wasn't for Mad Vlad.

Thanks Caper, and Airwolfhound.

I Know. It was looking promising for RIAT '22 wasn't it.

Let's hope the Ukrainians are putting whatever is left of their fleet to good use, and that we can provide enough Storm Shadows to keep them effective. Maybe at the end of this mess we'll get to welcome them back to RIAT again.
