ZigAirMeet 23 - (Naughty) Mountain, Airshow, Emotions

Post by Mictheslik »

Anyone who follows me on social media will probably be fed up with how much I have been singing the praises of the ZigAirmeet over the last two weeks. I think I can comfortably say it was the most enjoyable airshow I've ever been to. Obviously a large part of that is the stunning setting at Mollis, but the lineup, atmosphere and weather were also all (mostly) perfect.

The biggest attraction for me was the mountain opposite the airfeild (Now known as "The Naughty Mountain" :D ) and the potential photo opportunities afforded by climbing up through the various public footpaths. On the arrivals day, after a brief stop at a prominent white cross that overlooked the north of the airfield, I decided to scope out my preferred location for the show. 450m of climbing later, I found myself in a picturesque alpine clearing looking straight down at show centre. That afternoon the weather rolled in and the Typhoon did a practice display in the middle of a thunderstorm! I went back to the same spot for the Friday show, and I can't quite describe the sensation of being in the middle of a flying display.

I went inside on the Saturday, but haven't started editing this photos yet, so thought I would put these up first. I also thought I'd pop by on the Sunday to see if anything was departing, and found that the old taxiway was now a public cycleway and footpath. The whole airfield was open with no fences! Possibly the best access to a departures day I've ever experienced.

If you made it this far, congratulations. Who knows how long it will take me to edit all the shots from inside on Saturday but I'll add them to the bottom when I do!

Likewise. I only noticed the dates after my wife and I had booked flights to Switzerland, landing the day after the show!

Some stunning photos there. I've seen plenty from inside which look pretty good too, so good to see something different. Is it going to be an annual thing? If so I'd better start saving for the next one!

The last one is in 2019, they are great shows and it's not far from Zurich,

Lovely photos and well done for sorting out so promptly. It will take ages to sort through mine.

I did it in reverse to you, showground Friday, naughty mountain Saturday. Thanks for bagging me in #57. Didn't make the arrivals as not quite enough time but did manage to see F-18 pairs over the Zurichsee whilst out and about.

I think the last ZigAirMeet (Zigermeet IIRC) was 2019 but think they did a fairly impromptu show there early September 2021.

Not started sorting out any 2023 photos yet whatsoever - so, apologies, it will be quite a while before I post anything from this show. Great weather and a nice warm up for Axalp. Well done.

Rich

I think it's a bi-annual show and have a feeling that this was the 8th edition. I notice Dittingen have confirmed that particular weekend for next year - I think they used to oscillate like this pre-covid. Of course we're waiting to hear whether they'll do an Air24 at Payerne (or Emmen maybe?) instead of Axalp (which is what they normally do for years ending in a 4) next year. IF 2024 is the last year of the Patrouille de Suisse then this would make perfect sense - Wikipedia suggests a weekend length show rather than the elongated 100yr event last time. I guess it's a case of watch this space. I'm sure we'll hear more shortly after this year's Axalp :grinning:

I must say, I'm extremely jealous! Fantastic shots. I suspect this show will be popular next time it comes around.

What a unique view of an airshow from above. Many of these look like air to air shots. Bully for you!
