Cleveland National Air Show

Post by sylvancatharsis »

Ohio, the self-proclaimed Birthplace of Aviation (it says so on their license plates), really loves air shows. Hot on the heels of Dayton, the Cleveland National Air Show, successor to the Cleveland National Air Races of years past, takes place every year on Labor Day weekend, and it's a favorite of aviation enthusiasts and photographers for facing mostly north with the sun at the crowd's back until the very late afternoon, when it begins to peer a bit over the left shoulder. The 2023 iteration held special appeal, as it was one of only TWO (!!!) shows in North America to feature a Harrier demo - outside the USMC bases, anyway, and I'm not even sure they got it. For me and many others, the Harrier was the primary reason for going, though there was plenty more on offer.

1. Starting with the star of the show:

2. Since the display datum is actually over Lake Erie, the USAF allows the Raptor to pop a few flares:

3. No flares for the Super Hornet, so VFA-106 decided to bring their Fluffy Delight trick instead:

4. And just so no one could claim a dearth of fast jets, the Louisiana ANG "Bayou Militia" stopped by. I'm told that they went home after the Saturday show, so...glad I went Saturday.

5. Never thought I'd be so excited to see a Hercules, but Legacy Hercs with four-bladed props are becoming rare as hen's teeth over here. The folks from Youngstown, just down the road, were happy to oblige with a quite lovely display.

6. I was rather intrigued to see what the KC-135 "Demo Team" would do. Turns out the "demo" is...one pass. Oh well, better than nothing, and at least it had a tail flash...

7. By the time the Thunderbirds performed, the clouds had built up a bit. Still enough ceiling for their full show.

8. The show featured only a handful of civilian acts, but among them was one of my personal favorites, the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team.

9. Early in the show, a trio of local medevac helicopters performed a series of flybys, including two Metro LifeFlight H145s...

10. ...and this quite lovely H135.

11. Continuing on the lifesaving theme, the Coast Guard unit from Detroit brought their MH-65.

12. The legendary Patty Wagstaff

13. The aptly named, infinitesimal SubSonex Micro Jet, flown by former F-15 driver Tom Larkin:

14. As per usual at US shows, things kicked off with parachuting, this time courtesy of the Golden Knights...

16. ...who also performed their full show later in the day, complete with a parade pass from their C-147A, a.k.a. Dash 8-300.

17. This MD530 was (sort of) part of the show, flying up and down the showline prior to the Thunderbirds' display taking photos of the crowd:

18. As was this King Air, used to shuttle USAF crews from the showground to Hopkins International Airport, where all USAF assets for the flying display (save the C-130) were staged:

19. Prior to the show proper was some uninhabited flying activity, including RC models and a showcase of drones.

On the static front, it was a matter of quality over quantity. Starting with the D-Day C-17 from my hometown unit:

44. VX-9 sent a pair of Rhinos, including this beauty:

45. Plus a more typical one:

46. With the recent news that the T-45 fleet is soon going to be repainted in boring old grey, enjoy these while you can:

47. With so many shows getting special-scheme Jayhawks, it was (good*/disappointing* - delete as appropriate) to see a normal white one:

48. Like their friendly sporting rivals in Pennsylvania, the Ohioans sent a special-scheme heavy across the state:

Thanks, Sean. Enjoyed them all but the black Hornet stands out for me.

An excellent set of images. I like your close-cropped tail images.

Was in your home town of Pittsburgh a few weeks ago.
Cheers,
